To loosen the trade barriers between the USA and the Japanese Empire , the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota decided to import the Chevrolet Cavalier and sell it under its own brand name as Toyota Cavalier (Japanese: ト ヨ タ ・ キ ャ バ リ エ).

The first Cavalier e were imported to Japan in January 1996. Toyota then had to convert the US vehicles accordingly for the home market. Because the steering wheel was on the left side of the vehicle. To make this possible, Toyota had to have a completely new dashboard installed, with the individual instruments and buttons in the same place as the Japanese.

When the model finally officially appeared on the market for the first time at the end of January, it was offered as a notchback sedan , coupé and cabriolet . The basic version was initially the Cavalier 2.3 with a displacement of 2294 cm³ ( LD2 ). In the same year this was replaced by the larger LD9 with a displacement of 2392 cm³ (4-cylinder DOHC). The top version was the sporty Z24 version of the TRD .

The main customers were fire departments and the police . Most vehicles had to be shipped overseas due to insufficient demand. These were mostly East Asian , Middle Eastern and New Zealand markets .

Although the price for the Cavalier range was finally reduced by 40 % in November 1996 , the model was a flop in Japan. Regardless, Toyota continued to import the Cavalier.

In March 2000 there were new headlights for the Cavaliere. But it wasn't until July 2000 that imports stopped. The official successor was the Toyota Allion .
