The first generation of the tC was introduced in 2004 and is based on the 2003 Avensis. The designation, which differs from the usual Scion models, comes from the fact that XC is already used by Volvo for their SUVs.
The 2.4-l engine with 120 kW used in the tC comes from the Avensis and functions as the largest engine. The tC made up half of all Scion models sold at times.

The car was based on the platform of the Avensis introduced in Europe in 2009. As with this one, the appearance has only changed a lot in the front; the dimensions have remained almost the same.
The 2.5-liter engine (Toyota 2AR-FE) used in the second generation tC no longer comes from the Avensis.
In 2013, the model underwent a facelift that can be distinguished primarily by a modified headlight shape and modified bumper. The taillights were converted to LED lamps. The engine output was increased to 133 kW (181 hp).
The Scion tC was discontinued in North America in 2016, along with the brand's remaining models.
