The Subaru BRZ / Toyota GT86 , presented for the first time at the Tokyo Motor Show 2011, is a four-seater sports coupé that was created in cooperation between the Japanese automobile manufacturers Subaru and Toyota and is manufactured by Subaru. The BRZ / GT86 is the first sports coupe in Toyota's model range since the Celica was discontinued in August 2005 and was placed as its successor. The first concept vehicle was presented under the name Toyota FT-86 and visually differed from the later production model. At Subaru the model is called Subaru BRZ . The technical basis for the vehicle is the modified Subaru platform of the fourth generation Impreza (platform AS1).

history

The GT86, designed as a 2 + 2-seater, appeared on the European market on September 15, 2012, the Subaru BRZ was presented in March 2012 with a starting price of around 30,000 euros. Comparable models include the Peugeot RCZ or the Audi TT . According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority , a total of 1,139 Toyota GT86 were newly registered in Germany in 2012; in 2013 there were 2,067 vehicles. In 2014, new registrations in Germany fell to 610 vehicles, in 2015 there were 347 and 299 in 2016. In 2017 there were 266, 2018 290 and 2019 273 vehicles.

A roadster version of the GT86 was presented as an open concept at the Geneva Motor Show 2013 and the first prototypes are being developed.

A small facelift was carried out in April 2014 . The roof rod antenna was replaced by a “shark fin antenna”, the airbag cover on the passenger side was designed in a carbon look and a tire pressure monitoring system was installed.

The actual facelift of the BRZ / GT86 was presented at the New York International Auto Show 2016. The revised model has a modified front bumper, the standard xenon headlights have been replaced by LED headlights and the rear spoiler has been enlarged. Another new feature is a 4.2-inch TFT color display in the instrument cluster of the "GT86" equipment variant, which, in addition to a digital fuel display, visualizes additional vehicle information such as battery voltage, coolant and oil temperature, g-forces as well as power and torque. For the non-European market, the FA20 boxer engine in the Subaru model received an increase in output to 207 hp (152 kW).

The GT86 is the result of a cooperation between Toyota and Fuji Heavy Industries , which also includes Subaru . Toyota Motor Corporation has a minority stake of 16.5% in Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. Subaru decided to develop the Subaru BRZ in February 2006 and built two prototypes. Two months later, Toyota asked Subaru if they were interested in manufacturing a sports coupe and a letter of intent was reached. By April 2008, Subaru had technically completed the BRZ project without the involvement of Toyota. This resulted in two further prototypes for final technical acceptance. In April 2008, Toyota then decided to place the project as the GT86 under the Toyota brand in their product portfolio. Until then, the technical development of the vehicle was carried out exclusively by Subaru. The Toyota GT86 prototypes shown between 2008 and 2011 were all created by Subaru in its own development departments or by external bodybuilders in Italy and were made available to Toyota. The design was developed jointly by Subaru and Toyota. The AS-1 platform on which the car is based, like the rest of the vehicle, is completely developed by Subaru or comes from the existing Subaru model range. The engine (FA20D) was also developed by Subaru and has the combined intake manifold and direct injection system "D-4S" which comes from Toyota. In addition to the GT86, the almost identical Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S models are also based on this platform (see sister models ). All variants of the Subaru BRZ (Scion / GT86) have the world manufacturer code JF1 (JF 1 = Subaru Co.) in the vehicle identification number.

Technical specifications

A front built Subaru gasoline engine in boxer construction method with two liters of displacement , four-cylinder, 147  kW (200  hp ) and 205 Nm powers the rear wheels. The GT86 is built at the Japanese Subaru plant in Ōta . The 4-cylinder boxer engine "FA20D" is a further development of the engine "FB", which is based on the type "EE", also with 86 mm bore and stroke, from 2008. The main difference to the FB engine is the design of the valve train. Toyota specifies consumption as 7.8 l / 100 km (EC total). For the facelift in 2016, Subaru is offering the FA20 boxer with 6-speed manual transmission for the non-European market in the GT with 207 PS (205 bhp or 152 kW). By changing the camshaft, cylinder head and an aluminum intake bridge, it was also possible to increase the torque from 205 to 211 Nm. The optically enhanced engine is distinguished by a red-painted intake bridge.

You can choose between a six-speed manual gearbox and a six-speed automatic, which is operated via paddles on the steering wheel. Both gearboxes are based on gearboxes from the supplier Aisin . There are ESP and ABS as standard . The GT86 is light and compact, its curb weight is between 1219 and 1355 kilograms, depending on the equipment variant . The weight distribution between the axles is 53:47 percent, the 25 percent Torsen limited - slip differential and the VSC stability control (which can be manually deactivated) are intended to prevent loss of traction . The maximum 147 kW (200 hp) are available at 7000 rpm, the torque of 205 Nm at 6400-6600 rpm.

origin of the name

According to Toyota, the number 86 in the name is to be understood as a reference to the Toyota Corolla AE86 , also a small, light and especially popular in the tuning and drifting scene . At Subaru, the term BRZ stands for Boxer , Rearwheel Drive , Zenith .

In addition, the engine has a square design with a bore and a stroke of 86 millimeters - just like some of the engines in earlier Toyota sports cars. The diameter of the exhaust pipes is also 86 millimeters. This is represented by a logo on the front fenders in the form of two opposing pistons and the number 86 between them.

GT ts

Special model Subaru BRZ ts (2015)

In 2013 Subaru presented the "BRZ ts" (ts stands for tuned by STi ) as a special model limited to 500 pieces. In addition to a Brembo brake system from the WRX STi, this model had 18-inch rims, a revised chassis and was only available in Japan. 250 of the 500 vehicles were also available as a "GT Package", which, in addition to black painted rims, was equipped with an adjustable rear spoiler made of carbon and Recaro sports seats.

In 2015 Subaru presented the second special series of the "BRZ ts", which was also produced in limited numbers for the Japanese market (300 vehicles).

GT86 TRD

In 2014, a optically modified GT86 special model by TRD (Toyota Racing Development) appeared. It is limited to 250 copies and features new body parts, 18-inch alloy wheels and a four-pipe exhaust system. The engine and transmission remained unchanged, and the performance is almost identical. The TRD attachments were also made by Subaru. In addition to this own model, parts from TRD can also be ordered individually. In Germany, for example, spoilers, diffusers, TRD emblems, light alloy wheels, stabilizers and a monoblock brake system are available. The TRD brake system comes from the Subaru model kit and corresponds to the brakes of the Impreza WRX STi 2014 .

GT86 Style Cb

In April 2015 the Japan-exclusive special model "GT86 Style Cb" will appear, which differs from the base vehicle by a newly designed front with rounded headlights. The classic Toyota logo with the stylized "T" on the bonnet and steering wheel have been replaced by the lettering "Cb", which stands for "Cool beauty". A market launch in Europe or the USA is currently not planned, so all models built are expected to be right-hand drive for the Japanese market. A contrasting color for the roof is optionally available. The engine and transmission remained unchanged. Although Toyota did not officially have a previous concept vehicle, the "Style Cb" is largely based on the "Cb Concept", which the company Gazoo Racing showed in 2014 at the Tokyo Motor Show. In this vehicle, however, the rear was also modified, while in "Style Cb" only the front was changed. It is still unknown whether and to what number the model will be limited.

GT86 Tiger

In March 2017 Toyota presented the special model "GT86 Tiger", limited to 30 pieces for the German market, which is only available with the paint color "Tiger Orange".

BRZ Cool Gray Khaki and GT86 Shark

At the end of 2017, Subaru presented the “Cool Gray Khaki” special model, limited to 100 vehicles. This is a Subaru BRZ STi with extended equipment in the color "Cool Gray Khaki". This color was offered for the European market under the name “GT86 Shark” by Toyota.

GT86 Black Limited

Toyota presented the special edition Black Limited , limited to 86 copies , in March 2020. It is only available in Japan.

BRZ Final Edition

In March 2020, Subaru announced that production of the BRZ would soon be phased out. For this reason, the limited Final Edition is being launched and will be available in stores from July 2020.

Concept vehicles

FT-HS

At the North American International Auto Show 2007, Toyota presented the FT-HS hybrid car, a first study that was equipped with a 294 kW (400 hp) V6 engine with a displacement of 3.5 liters and an electric motor . Much of the technology was based on the Lexus GS 450h at the time . Due to its high performance, the trade press saw it as a possible successor to the Supra Mk.4 (JZA80) discontinued in 2002 . Some design elements of the production vehicle are already visible in this early study. The concept vehicle has nothing to do with Subaru development, but is a separate Toyota design from the project that was stopped in 2008, which has been replaced by BRZ development.

FT-86

At the Tokyo Motor Show 2009 Toyota presented the near-series study FT-86 for the first time, which already had a boxer engine with a displacement of 2 liters. The electric motor was omitted.

FT-86 G Sports

A modified version of the FT-86 study, the FT-86 G Sports, was first presented at the 2010 Tokyo Motor Show. The use of a turbocharger increased the performance. The compact sports car was designed for the racetrack with lightweight construction, add-on parts made of carbon fiber , sports bucket seats from the Recaro brand and a roll cage .

FT-86 II

At the Geneva Motor Show 2011, the development was introduced, the FT-86 II, which mainly by its distinctive LED - daytime running distinguished. With the Subaru BRZ STi Concept and the Scion FR-S Concept, the two sister models also had their own concept vehicles .
