Class : Middle class

The Toyota Vista was a passenger car that Toyota launched in Japan in 1982 as a sister model of the Camry . The name was introduced along with the new Toyota Vista dealer network . Unlike the Camry, which was available with a V6 engine as early as 1988, the Vista only had petrol or diesel in-line four-cylinder engines.

Each generation of Vista was essentially a Camry for the Japanese market, with a different front and rear. While the Camry was only available as a sedan, with the exception of the first generation , the Vista was also available as a station wagon ; most Vista - up to generation V40 - are hardtop models. Whenever a new generation of the Camry came out, the Vista got a facelift too . This pattern continued until 1996 when a new Camry came out and was offered worldwide. Prior to 1996, the larger CX / CV platform was offered in Japan as the Scepter (MCV10) and Camry Gracia (MCV20 / MCX20). In August 1998 the last Vista was developed independently of the Camry.

The Vista appeared in April 1982 as a higher-end trim of the second generation Camry and was sold through the Vista dealer network. There was a 4-door sedan and a 5-door station wagon, both initially with a manual five-speed gearbox. In August 1982 an automatic transmission was submitted. There were four equipment variants, VC, VL, VE and the top equipment VX. The official name of the car was Toyota Camry Vista . A sliding glass roof was only available in the top-of-the-range VX together with the 2S-ELU motor.

In August 1983 the 1.8 l R4 turbo diesel engine 1C-TL was offered as an alternative. In June 1984 the chassis became harder and therefore sportier and the 2.0 l R4 DOHC engine was also offered in the VS equipment line. Back then, an engine with two overhead camshafts in a front-wheel drive car was still an unusual occurrence. In August 1985 the diesel engine was bored out to 2.0 l.

The second generation of the Vista was offered from August 1986 and - unlike the higher-quality sister model Lexus ES  - not available with a V6 engine. The 5-door station wagon was replaced by a 4-door hardtop sedan, which was placed alongside the 4-door sedan (with B-pillars) that were still offered. The appearance and social status were similar to those of the larger Mark II . The Vista was still a sportier version of the simpler Camry sedan and it was also available in the GT version. All engines available were fuel-injected.

In October 1987, all-wheel drive for the 2.0 l R4 engine 4S-Fi was introduced, which was combined with an automatic transmission as standard. The Vista Etoile got the 4S FE engine.

The 1.8 l 4S engine, the 2.0 l 3S engine and the 2.0 l 2C T turbo diesel engine were available. All engines had twin overhead camshafts (DOHC). The models with a 2.0 liter petrol engine were also available with all-wheel steering on request . The VX was also available with leather upholstery from May 1991. From July 1992, the 3S-GE motor was no longer supplied for the higher equipment variants and the air conditioning systems contained the new CFC-free refrigerant R134a.

The Camry was now primarily a model made for the USA, with the narrower, shorter version being discontinued for the Japanese market. Thus the Vista was the only model available in this size class (4.7 mx 1.7 m). Toyota gave the Vista new impetus with a makeover. The car was 100 mm longer than its predecessor.

This Vista was noteworthy as it was one of the first results of Toyota's company-wide effort to refresh the model range. Construction of the new front-wheel drive platform began in 1993, and this platform first appeared with the Prius in February 1997, but the Vista was the first mass-produced car on this new platform. Toyota claims this was the first major overhaul of the front-wheel drive platform since the Camry and Vista models appeared in 1982. In this platform, Toyota uses a torsion beam axle at the rear instead of MacPherson struts . A rear axle with double wishbones was available for all four-wheel drive cars, and this became the standard for all front-wheel drive cars with higher requirements - such as B. the last Celica . Toyota also turned the engines around so that the intake duct was now at the front, which created more space in the engine compartment.

The fifth generation of the Vista was available as a four-door sedan and as a five-door station wagon called Vista Ardeo . Engines with 1.8 l and 2.0 l displacement were available. On the dashboard there was a centrally mounted group of instruments, which also included the GPS navigation .

The platform was the same as that of the first generation Prius , Grandpa , WISH , Caldina , Avensis, and Celica .

The production of the Vista was stopped in 2003, because Toyota wanted to integrate the Vista dealers into the NETZ dealer network. The idea to simplify the Toyota dealer network came in preparation for the introduction of the Lexus brand , which was planned for August 2005. In April 2005 the process was completed and all Vista dealers had become NETZ dealers.
