The Toyota Estima is a van that has been produced by Toyota since 1990. In Europe it was offered as the successor to the Toyota Model F (Space Cruiser) until 2006 and in North America as the successor to the Toyota Van until 1997, both as Toyota Previa . In Australia it replaced the Toyota Tarago and is offered there under the same name. As Toyota Previa, it is still used in markets such as B. New Zealand , Taiwan and Hong Kong offered. Depending on the equipment variant, it offers space for up to eight people.

The special thing about the models of the first generation from May 1990 to December 1999 were the underfloor motor between the front and rear axles ( middle motor ) and the rear wheel drive. This concept brought many advantages: balanced weight distribution front / rear, a shorter overall length with a large interior length due to the more compact front structure. In order to keep the interior floor level, a motor had to be specially developed that was placed between the underbody and the passenger compartment. T-series motors were used in the Estima. Disadvantages of this unique concept were poor access to the engine, less interior height due to the transmission tunnel and poorer winter suitability than with front-wheel drive. Accordingly, the next generation received front-wheel drive, like all other minivans.
The 2TZ engine was a 4- cylinder in - line engine , inclined 75 degrees to the right, installed lengthways . In order to carry out maintenance work on the motor (eg changing. Iridium - Spark km every 90,000, valve clearance check every 80,000 km), the right front seat and the floor panel had to be removed right. The camshaft of the DOHC 16-valve engine was driven by a maintenance-free roller chain . The mixture preparation worked with an electronic multi-point injection , which was controlled by the engine control unit ECU.
Since the small height of the space under the vehicle floor left no space for the additional units, they were under the front hood like a "normal" car. The alternator , oil pump for the power steering and the compressor for the air conditioning as well as the radiator fan with viscous coupling were driven by a PTO shaft from the mid- engine by means of grooved belts . The starter was on the left side of the engine, the water pump on the front of the engine.
The Estima was driven by a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission from Aisin AW on the rear wheels. In some markets the Estima could also be supplied with permanent all-wheel drive with a central differential viscous clutch .
The front axle had MacPherson struts with lower wishbones. In models with simple equipment, the rear axle was designed as a rigid axle with upper trailing arms and coil springs. The models with higher equipment had independent suspension with lower triangular wishbones and upper sickle-shaped wishbones.
In the standard version, the first generation of the Toyota Estima was 4750 mm long and 1803 mm wide. In Japan two narrower versions were offered, the Toyota Estima Lucida and the Toyota Estima Emina , which were about 110 mm narrower and 70 mm shorter than the normal version . The reason for this was the Japanese road tax, which is based on the length and width of the vehicle. The narrower variants fell into a lower tax bracket.

North America
In North America, the Estima was sold as Previa from 1991 to 1997. The Previa quickly became a popular type of vehicle in the US, despite its relatively high price and fuel consumption. Mainly because of the popularity of Japanese vehicles in the United States at a time when domestic vehicles were perceived as being of inferior quality. The mid-engine concept turned out to be a particular weakness in the US, as it didn't allow for a more powerful engine to be built in. The competition such as B. Chrysler Voyager also offered V6 engines. From 1994 Toyota solved this problem by installing a two-screw Roots compressor with an intercooler . This increased the engine output to up to 160 hp (120 kW). Originally the engine, now called S / C, was only available as an option in 1994 and 1995. From 1996 the naturally aspirated engine was discontinued and the S / C became the standard engines. In North America, the Previa was replaced in 1998 by the Toyota Sienna based on the Toyota Camry .

From 2000, the second edition of the Estima was built, but it no longer had an underfloor motor or rear-wheel drive. The engine was now installed in the front and the front wheels were driven. All-wheel drive was again available as an option. The Toyota Camry was also the basis. As Toyota Previa it was offered again in Europe with a 2.4-liter petrol engine or a 2.0-liter diesel engine. While the Toyota Previa was only available with a manual five-speed gearshift in the diesel engine version, you could choose between four-speed automatic or manual gearshifts for the petrol engine version. In Australia it was offered again as the Toyota Tarago , only with the 2.4L and 4-speed automatic transmission. In addition, the Estima was available in Japan with the 3.0 L 1MZ-FE V6 petrol engine.
In June 2001, the Estima with Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive was launched in Japan . With an electric motor and a CVT transmission , the Estima Hybrid was the world's first hybrid minivan.

The third generation of the Estima was introduced to the Japanese market in 2006 and again as the Toyota Tarago in Australia . In some markets such as B. Hong Kong and Taiwan it will continue to be offered as Toyota Previa . Front-wheel drive is also available as standard and all-wheel drive is optional. For the time being, a 2.4L petrol engine was again available as an engine, which is offered as standard with automatic transmission in Australia. A 3.5L V6 engine (199 kW / 271 PS) has also been available since 2007 and is also available in Hong Kong and Taiwan. There is no longer a diesel engine. Its absence in Europe is remarkable. So that Volkswagen does not lose too much market share, the prices of the VW Sharan II and Seat Alhambra II models have been reduced. This led to a loss of market share or a loss in the sales price of the other providers in the segment. Toyota vehicles often fetch a higher price in the European market, but the scope is limited. When Ford Europe announced the third generation of the Ford Galaxy with a low list price, Toyota therefore decided not to import the Estima anymore due to the expected low margin.

Second generation Estima Hybrid
The second generation Estima Hybrid is currently only available in Japan and Hong Kong. It uses a drivetrain similar to the Lexus RX 400h with two electric motors - one for the front wheels and a rear electric motor that drives the rear wheels for all-wheel drive.
