The Toyota Hiace is since 1967 produced by Toyota pickup truck . While the first two models were also available as a flatbed truck , since then only the Toyota Dyna has been offered for this purpose, which was also offered as a Hiace truck for the transition in Japan . The Toyota Commuter was also developed by the Hiace , a minibus which is also offered as the Toyota Ses'fikile in South Africa . Thanks to its simple and robust technology, the Hiace is also popular in emerging and developing countries. It is also made in China by a large number of manufacturers, but many of them are plagiarism. From 1996, the range of Hiace in Europe and the rest of the world differed . While the Hiace H100 was offered everywhere until 2004, the Hiace XH10 based on the Toyota Granvia replaced the H100 in Europe . Between 1999 and 2005, the Hiace XH10 was also offered in Asia as the Toyota Grand Hiace . The Hiace H200 has been around since 2004, but the Hiace XH10 was still on offer in Europe until partially in 2012, and was replaced by the Toyota Proace in 2013 .

In February 1967 the first Hiace truck appeared as a pickup / truck as a smaller version of the Toyota Dyna (Toyoace in Japan). The engine is a 1.3-liter gasoline engine like the Toyota Corona , but throttled from 70 hp (51 kW) to 41 kW. This gives it a higher torque at low speeds. The minibus with 9 seats followed in October 1967, as did the panel van version, each with a side flap door and rear tailgate. The Toyota 2R 1.5 L petrol engine, which, like the Corona, develops 77 hp (57 kW), takes over the drive in the minibus. A panel van with six seats is also available from April 1968. Parallel to the other versions, it has a three-seater bench at the front and rear. With a longer wheelbase and rear overhang, a 15-seater minibus and a 12-seater minibus will be available from February 1969 . An ambulance is also offered on this basis . These versions get a Toyota 5R 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 98 hp (72 kW). In 1970 the safety equipment is improved. In February 1971 there were minor changes in the design of the radiator grille and parallel to the Corona, the 12R 1.6-liter petrol engine replaced the 1.5-liter and is now also available for the panel van and truck. The 1.3-liter engine is now also available in minibuses. In October 1972 the side flap door was replaced by a sliding door. From October 1975 the 16R 1.8 L petrol engine with 95 hp (70 kW) was also available. In addition to Asia and Oceania , the first generation of the Hiace is also offered for export in North America . In Europe , besides the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the Nordic countries , the Hiace is also available in other smaller markets such as Switzerland and Austria .

A new generation followed in February 1977. Again, the variants panel van, minibus and truck are available. The minibus now also has 10 seats as a deluxe. A minibus with 12 or 15 seats and an ambulance are also available with a longer wheelbase. In addition to the well-known 1.6-liter gasoline engine, a Toyota 18RU gasoline engine with 1968 cm³ is also available, which will be replaced from March 1979 by the Toyota 21RU gasoline engine with 1972 cm³ due to stricter emissions regulations. There is also a first facelift with a plastic grille. After the main competitor Nissan Urvan had already received a diesel engine in 1978 , Toyota followed suit in July 1979 with the 2200 cc diesel engine. In January 1980 the dashboard was changed and a 5-speed manual gearbox with overdrive was introduced. In January 1981 there was a smaller external facelift with now rectangular headlights on the truck and standard central electric sunroof on some minibus versions. Air conditioning is now also available, as is a four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive for the diesel engine. In addition to the previous export markets, the Hiace is now also offered in the rest of Western Europe , but is more successful in the smaller markets than z. B. in Germany . The truck is produced with minor modifications until August 1985, the other versions until November 1982.

Production of the third generation started in December 1982 and was sold in January 1983. The H50 had a short wheelbase, the H60 a longer one and the H70 the longest wheelbase. While a modified version of the 2nd generation continued to be offered in Asia until the summer of 1985, this role was taken over by the Toyota Dyna 100 , a smaller version of the Dyna which was called Toyopet in Japan. The smallest engine was a 1.8-liter gasoline engine; a 2.0-liter gasoline engine and a 2.2-liter diesel engine were also available. The 4-speed automatic transmission was now also available for the petrol engines. The minibus was now officially named Toyota Commuter .

From January 1984 the 2.0-L diesel engine (type Laser) with turbocharger replaced the previous unit and a 2.2-liter gasoline engine was also offered.

In August 1985, minor changes were made, especially in the interior. A seven-seater minivan equipped as a Super Custom Limited was offered . While the Commuter, the panel van and the minibus as well as the ambulance models continued to have round headlights, the van versions were equipped with square headlights. From now on, however, the export models outside Asia all wore square headlights.

With a payload of 1 ton, the Toyota Dyna 100 was offered in Asia as the Hiace H80 / 90 truck with a radiator grille based on the Hiace and rectangular headlights.

From August 1987, the Hiace was also available with all-wheel drive . From this point in time there were Super GL minibus variants with a high-quality interior.

Production ended in July 1989.

Hiace H50 in South Africa

In South Africa, the Hiace H50 was produced as a minibus and panel van with the 4Y EU 2.2 l petrol engine until 2007.

In August 1989 production of the completely renewed fourth generation started. The tank filler neck was relocated from right to left and instead of the steering wheel shift, there was now a conventional stick shift between the front seats. Depending on the market, an anti-lock braking system became standard. The 2.0-l 1RZ-E petrol engine now served as the base engine, followed by the 2.4-l 2RZ Type-E petrol engine. In addition to the 2.0-l turbodiesel, there was now also a 2.4-l diesel engine and a 2.8-l turbodiesel engine. The diesel engines were the only four-wheel drive available. In addition to the panel van and minibus variants, there was again the Minibus Commuter and the 7-seater minivan Super Custom Limited. The curb weight of the wagons is given as 1560–2110 kg.

  • From May 1992 an ambulance with a high roof and long wheelbase was offered as a Himedic .
  • In August 1993 there was a small facelift with modified headlights and taillights as well as a driver airbag that is standard depending on the market . At the same time, the Hiace lettering was omitted and the new Toyota emblem was found on the front of the vehicle. The permanent all-wheel drive of the Toyota Hilux was now installed with a differential lock and now automatic freewheel hubs . Instead of a carburetor, the 2.0-liter gasoline engine received an electronically controlled fuel injection. The turbo-diesel engine with 2.8 l displacement was replaced by an engine with 3.0 l displacement and an aluminum cylinder head. It became the standard motor in the commuter.
  • The panel van was revised in May 1995, as were the other versions from August 1995. After August 1995 a different model was offered in Europe than in the rest of the world (see Hiace XH10).
  • From August 1996 the model was delivered with minor changes. The passenger airbag, like ABS, became standard equipment in all versions. The 9-seater minibus was discontinued in favor of the Toyota Granvia . In the so-called Super Custom , automatic air conditioning was now part of the series standard along with other additional comfort features. The performance of the engines was improved and the payload increased to a maximum of 1250 kg.
  • Another facelift followed in August 1998 with a modified design of the radiator grille and bumpers.
  • From July 1999, the 2.0-liter diesel engine received a charge air cooler to increase performance and comply with the changed statutory emissions regulations. In addition, the Hiace lettering was reapplied to the front for the first time in six years. A new dashboard, changes in the interior and a socket for additional devices completed the revision. The Himedic model was now based on the Grand Hiace, which corresponds to the European Hiace XH10, as well as additional minibus and panel van versions.
  • In 2000 the 2.0-liter gasoline engine was discontinued and the new 2RZ-E with 2.4 l was the only available gasoline engine.
  • From August 2002 the super custom models were discontinued because of the new Toyota Alphard . In addition, there was only a limited range of models of the remaining van with diesel engine, due to the different emission regulations for car or truck registration. From this point on, only so-called commercial models were available.
  • In 2003, the 2.4-liter gasoline engine was specially revised for the Commuter and certified as low-emission.
  • In July 2004 the production of the series was stopped. The Grand Hiace minibus, panel van and Himedic models (based on Europe Hiace XH10) were produced until 2005.

Hiace H100 in other markets since 2002

The Hiace H100 has been produced as Toyota Quantum in South Africa since 2002 . The Bavarian Auto Group has been building the Hiace H50 as the Jinbei Cargo Van in Egypt since 2005 , as has Jinbei - a Brilliance China Automotive Holdings company - the Jinbei Haise in China . In addition, the model is also produced in China as Beijing BJ 6490, Jiangnan JNQ6495, and Foton View.

From August 1995 to 2012, the Hiace XH10 was offered exclusively in Europe. It was derived from the Toyota Granvia minivan and the engine and the front wheels were positioned in front of the driver's cab, which meant more safety than the previous model. For Europe there was a 2446 cc diesel engine with 58 kW (79 PS) or with a turbocharger and 66 kW (90 PS), in addition to a 2.4-liter gasoline engine with 85 kW (116 PS) and a 5-speed manual transmission for use. Panel vans and minibuses were available in 2 wheelbases and optionally with a high roof. All-wheel drive was also available in conjunction with the most powerful engines. Depending on the country, front airbags and ABS were standard. The curb weight of the wagons is given as 1745–1990 kg.

  • From April 1998, a 2.7-liter gasoline engine with 105 KW (143 hp) replaced the previous 2.4-liter. The Hiace XH 10 was offered in Asia as the Grand Hiace from 1999 . In addition to the engines and model versions known in Europe, there was also a 3.4-liter gasoline engine and a 3.0-liter turbo diesel engine. The Himedic was an ambulance based on the van with a long wheelbase and high roof.
  • From November 2001 a revised model was on the market. A diesel engine with 2494 cc and common rail injection in the output levels 65 kW (88 PS) and 75 kW (102 PS) replaced the previous diesel engines.
  • With the introduction of the Toyota Alphard in 2002, production of the Granvia ended. At the same time, the front of the Grand Hiace was modernized and now resembled the Granvia.
  • Production of the Grand Hiace in Japan ended in late 2005.
  • In the summer of 2006, Toyota presented a revised Hiace for Europe. He now essentially had the front line of the Grand Hiace, which was discontinued in 2005.

The gasoline engine was no longer available, the revised 2.5-liter D4-D diesel engine now developed 70 kW (95 PS) and 86 kW (117 PS).

  • From 2010, only the left-hand drive van with a short or long wheelbase, with a tailgate or 2 rear wing doors was available. The only engine variant was the diesel engine with 86 kW. All-wheel drive was still available.
  • In 2011, sales were largely stopped in Germany, among others.
  • In 2012, the Hiace was still on offer in some markets such as Norway , where a third of the Hiace imported to Europe were sold (over 4000 units in 2001). In the course of the year, however, production in Japan was stopped, so that imports also ended here.

The completely new Hiace H200 was launched in August 2004. In contrast to its predecessor, it now also had the engine in the front and therefore has more crumple zones. In addition to three different lengths, there are also three different body heights. There are panel van and minibus variants and, in turn, the minibus commuter and a motorhome ex works. With the start of the super-high roof variant in January 2005, a Himedic (ambulance) followed again. The gear lever is now a joystick in the dashboard. In Japan, a 4-speed automatic transmission as the standard version transmits the power of the engines, only the Commuter has a 5-speed manual transmission as standard. The inscription Hiace on the front is no longer there. The curb weight of the wagons is given as 1701–2111 kg. As diesel engines there are the 2KD-FTV with 2.5 l and here 75 kW (101 HP) and the 1KD-FTV 3000 with 2982 cm³ and 125 kW (170 HP), all with common Rail injection. The gasoline engines are the 1TR-FE with 1998 cm³ with 101 kW (136 PS) and the 2TR-FE with 2.7 l with 119 kW (159 PS). Both have two overhead camshafts and variable valve timing. In South Africa the same year the production of started Toyota Ses'fikile based on the Commuter and throughout Africa is offered.

  • In summer 2005, the export to the Philippines started as Toyota Hiace Grandia with the 2.5-liter diesel engine and 5-speed manual transmission. In Malaysia and other Asian markets, the Hiace H200 is also offered with a 2.5-liter diesel engine and a 2.7-liter gasoline engine. Since 2005, the model has also been available in North Korea under the name Pyeonghwa Samchunri and is successful there as a commercial vehicle.
  • In addition, the 5L-E was added to the range from 2005, a four-cylinder common rail diesel engine with 2986 cm³ and 72 kW (97 hp). It has a higher maximum torque than the 2.5-liter engine.
  • A revised version started in August 2007. A modified front grille on all models and revised seats are the most important changes besides the introduction of diesel particulate filters . Based on the Hiace H200, the Toyota Ventury and Toyota Ventury Majesty were launched in Thailand . These models are produced in China by Higer Bus as the Higer KLQ6540 . In China, the model is also produced as Jiangnan JNQ6495D and Jinbei Hiace (subsidiary of Brilliance). In parallel to its predecessor, Jinbei also produces the Hiace 200 as the Jinbei Hiace Awing in Egypt .
  • Another facelift followed in 2010 with a revised front. The engines are being extensively revised, thereby reducing fuel consumption.
  • Since April 2012, improved protection against theft has been installed. Here z. B. the immobilizer can optionally only be deactivated using the finger touchpad. This has the background that the Hiace is Japan's most stolen vehicle.
