The RAV4 ( Recreational Active Vehicle 4-Wheel Drive ) is a compact SUV from the Japanese car manufacturer Toyota .
The vehicle was presented in Germany and Japan in the summer of 1994, although it was only presented in the USA at the end of 1996. Like most modern SUVs, the RAV4 did not use the ladder-type frame that was customary in off-road vehicles , but a self-supporting body .

The idea of combining the advantages of passenger cars and off-road vehicles in this crossover concept became an unexpected success for Toyota. The relatively light, raised, self-supporting body in conjunction with permanent all-wheel drive and a 95 kW (129 hp) 2.0-liter 16-valve gasoline engine convinced both the automotive press and customers. The RAV4 developed into a coveted lifestyle vehicle within a short period of time. In contrast to heavier and more expensive off-road vehicles, the RAV4 had no disengageable all-wheel drive, no gear reduction or individually lockable differentials . Only the center differential could be locked (center differential lock only in connection with manual transmission). Nevertheless, due to the permanent all-wheel drive as well as the large ground clearance and the short body overhangs, it offered a perfectly usable off-road capability. It was produced in Nagoya .
Initially, the RAV4 was only offered as a three-door model from August 1994, and the five-door model followed in February 1995 with significantly improved space. Due to the longer wheelbase, the ride comfort was better and the handling was more balanced.
Facelift
At the beginning of 1998 a first facelift took place with changes to the headlights, rear lights and grille as well as a revised interior. In addition, the model range was expanded to include a cabriolet based on the three-door model .
The only available engine with a displacement of two liters and 95 kW (129 hp) remained unchanged until the end of production . This was with a five-speed manual transmission or optional four-speed automatic combining a.
Production of the first RAV4 generation ended in mid-2000.

From the end of 1997, Toyota also offered a fully electric electric car version of the RAV4 for the Californian market after the CARB laws at the time forced car manufacturers to gradually introduce so-called zero-emission vehicles (ZEV).
The vehicles were only leased to the users. A purchase was (as with other EV manufacturers) not possible at the time.
RAV4 EVs have not been manufactured since the end of 2003 after pressure from the automotive industry eased the strict emissions laws in California. The automakers even tried to scrap the existing electric vehicles entirely.
A total of 1575 RAV4 EVs were built. Today there are still around 800 RAV4 EVs on the road. These vehicles were u. a. Saved from scrapping by Toyota through campaigns like Don't Crush .
The oil multinational Texaco (now Chevron ) bought the patents for the production of NiMH batteries and limited the production of large-format NiMH cells worldwide. Toyota / Panasonic and other battery manufacturers were sued by Chevron. The historical connections were shown in the 2006 documentary Why the Electric Car Had to Die .
The RAV4 EV reached a top speed of 126 km / h (78 mph) and had a range of 160 to 190 km (100 to 120 miles). Except for the electric drive train, the RAV4 EV was equipped identically to the model with a combustion engine. An electrically driven vacuum pump was used to implement the brake booster, while electric motors were used for power steering and air conditioning. It was heated electrically.
95Ah NiMH cells with a total capacity of 27 kWh were used as energy storage. Several RAV4 EVs have already achieved mileage of over 150,000 miles (240,000 km) with the original traction battery . The RAV4 EV was charged with the Magne-Charge charging system developed by General Motors using an inductive, touch-safe “charging paddle”. On the vehicle side, this paddle was pushed contactlessly into a loading slot. This charging system was also used in the GM EV1 and other vehicles from this period.

In August 2000, the second generation of the RAV4 appeared with a significantly larger body. The two-body concept with a short three-door and longer five-door was retained.
The 2-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine increased to 110 kW (150 hp) and was now made of aluminum .
A 2-liter, 4-cylinder common rail turbo diesel engine with 85 kW (116 hp) and charge air cooling (D4-D) was available for the first time in the second RAV4 generation . The diesel models were recognizable by the air scoop on the bonnet above the charge air cooler .
For the first time, a RAV4 model without all-wheel drive appeared. The 1.8-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine developed 92 kW (125 hp) and was available as both a three-door and a five-door model. The power was transferred to the front wheels .
In July 2003 there was again a revision with a modified interior and different front aprons .
A license of this type is sold in China as the Jonway UFO .

The third RAV4 appeared in Germany in March 2006. Compared to the second generation, the body grew by up to 12 cm in external length. For the first time, the RAV4 was only available as a five-door model.
A version with pure front-wheel drive was no longer offered due to a lack of public interest. The vehicle is equipped with an all-wheel drive system (Active Torque Control) that uses an electromagnetically controlled clutch. The torque distribution between the front and rear axles is continuously optimized while driving.
In addition, vehicle dynamics controls such as VSC + (Vehicle Stability Control) of the latest generation have been installed, which Toyota calls IADS (Intelligent Active Drive System) as a whole. The systems are able, for example, to recognize oversteer or understeer tendencies of the vehicle and to actively support the driver in correct steering reactions or to make incorrect steering reactions more difficult. The system monitors and controls all active driving safety systems such as ABS, brake assist , TRC (traction control, anti-slip regulation ), VSC + and the electronic power steering.
The spare wheel is in the highest trim level in conjunction with the 130 kW diesel no longer exists, as these tires with emergency running features (Run Flat Tire), at least 80 kilometers the way to a garage at reduced speed (80 km / h ) enable.

Facelift
In February 2009 the RAV4 received a facelift. The front, rear and sills were optically changed. The interior was also slightly modified. Contrary to all expectations, Toyota is now offering a version with pure front-wheel drive (4x2) in the revised RAV4. The front-wheel drive is only available with a gasoline engine and can only be ordered with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The all-wheel drive version of the gasoline engine is available with the new continuously variable automatic transmission (Multidrive-S).
A 6-speed automatic system has recently become an option for the 110 kW diesel.
Since September 2009, the diesel version with 110 kW (150 PS) has also been available as a front-wheel drive (4x2) with 6-speed manual transmission.

In April 2010 the RAV4 was revised again. The entire front including the bonnet, headlights, radiator grille and fog lights as well as the front apron were modified.
Production of the third generation ended in early 2013.

The fourth generation of the RAV4 celebrated its world premiere at the LA Auto Show 2012. The European market launch was on April 13, 2013.
With a length of 4570 mm, the new model has grown by 205 mm compared to its predecessor. In addition, the new generation is 30 mm wider and 25 mm lower. For the first time, LED daytime running lights are used on the RAV4 .
There are three engines available, two of which are diesel engines and one gasoline engine . Like the more powerful diesel, this was taken over from its predecessor, while the 2-liter diesel with 91 kW (124 hp) was added to the range. The petrol engine, also with a displacement of 2 liters, has an output of 111 kW (151 hp), a little less than its predecessor, the 2.2-liter diesel has an unchanged 110 kW (150 hp).
For the Russian and Belarusian markets, Toyota will start producing the RAV4 in Saint Petersburg in 2016.
Facelift
The revised Toyota RAV4 has been available since the end of January 2016. In addition to a new diesel engine from BMW , which can no longer be coupled with all-wheel drive or automatic transmission, the 2.0-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine has been retained. The 91 kW and 110 kW diesel engines are no longer required. For the first time, Toyota is offering a hybrid version of the RAV4 that uses the powertrain of the Lexus NX 300h.

The fifth generation of the RAV4 was presented to the public for the first time at the New York International Auto Show 2018. The market launch took place on January 26, 2019. For the LA Auto Show in November 2019, Toyota announced the RAV4 with plug-in hybrid drive. It is the strongest RAV4 offered so far. This version will also be sold by Suzuki as Across from the end of 2020 .
In China , the SUV is sold by both the FAW- Toyota joint venture and, formerly, Gonow . The vehicle built near Guangzhou is sold as the Toyota Wildlander , the vehicle built by FAW as the Toyota RAV4.
The new model has a completely revised design that differs significantly from its predecessor. It is the first RAV4 to be built on the Toyota New Global Architecture Platform (TNGA). With a length of 4600 mm, it has only grown slightly compared to the fourth generation RAV4. The overhangs at the front and rear were shortened, the wheelbase was lengthened by 30 mm and the width increased to 1855 mm. The luggage space has also been enlarged.
According to the manufacturer, the engines are more economical and more powerful than before. Toyota will no longer offer diesel engines for the vehicle, but rather a hybrid drive with a 2.5-liter gasoline engine. In addition, a two-liter gasoline engine was sold by May 2020. Outside Europe, a 2.5-liter gasoline engine is also available. A digital interior mirror system will also be offered for an equipment variant (Limited).
