In 1985 Toyota launched the Carina ED to close the gap in the middle class. The design of the model was developed by students at the Institute of Technology at Nagoya University . The Tetsu Kimura design was awarded a special award to the design manager and the director of Nagoya University in 1986 by the then incumbent Tennō .

1This engine was only available in the Carina ED Twin Cam Sport . The top model was the fully equipped Carina ED Stardust .

In August 1987 the 1S-ELU was exchanged for the newer 3S-FELU. From now on, fog lights in the front bumper were standard equipment.

The 1S-ILU was replaced by the 4S-FI in May 1988. At the same time, the カ リ ー ナ ED タ ミ ヤ 製 プ ラ モ デ ル 2.0G-Limited Autopista 仕 様 (in German: Carina ED Tamiya-Wunder-Version 2.0G-Limited Autopista) was added as a new top model.

In January 1989 production of the ST160 generation was stopped.

In October 1993 the third generation of the Carina ED was launched. As the popularity of sophisticated design increased in Japan, the model was designed like its predecessors. But the model is struggling with the effects of the stock market crash. Nevertheless, Toyota gave the model series one last chance with the ST200 generation. Like its predecessor, the Carina ED remained a front-wheel drive.

Engine selection October 1993 to May 1994:

  • 4S-FE with a displacement of 1838 cm³ and an output of 125 hp
  • 3S-FE with a displacement of 1998 cm³ and an output of 140 hp
  • 3S-GE with a displacement of 1998 cm³ and an output of 180 hp

In May 1994 the Carina ED model series was converted into an all-wheel drive model. The manual gearbox has now also been replaced with a 4-speed automatic. Furthermore, the new top model was established, the Carina ED GT-FOUR . At the same time, Toyota removed the 3S-FE and 4S-FE engines from the range, so that the Carina ED vehicles were only available with 175 hp.

The company made further changes in September 1995. The front bumpers and the model logo were changed. The driver airbag was now a standard feature. The automatic air conditioning, on the other hand, was exchanged for manual heating and could no longer be installed at an additional cost.

Another stock market crash in Japan brought the financial situation of many companies into difficulties. As a result, private individuals were very reluctant to buy. This aggravated the situation for the Carina ED even more. Despite the profitless situation, the model series got its very last chance and the last improvements in June 1996. Now the passenger airbag and ABS have also become standard equipment. The SC package (sports package) was also offered free of charge .

After 13 years, the model series was suspended indefinitely in April 1998.
