The Toyota Ist is a small car from the Japanese car manufacturer Toyota , which has been sold since 2002. In Japan the first generation was sold by Toyota as the Ist , in the USA the same car was sold in the first generation as the Scion xA . It is based on the Toyota Yaris. The second generation is again marketed as Toyota Ist in Japan and now as Scion xD in the USA. Between 2009 and 2014, this generation was also offered in Europe as the Toyota Urban Cruiser . The main competitors in Japan are the Honda Fit and the Nissan March .

Based on the first generation of the Toyota Yaris hatchback, the first generation shared a platform with the Toyota Platz . The Ist was developed with a crossover SUV design and offered the flexibility of larger SUVs, but with the advantage of lower fuel consumption. It was first introduced at the Tokyo Auto Show in 2001 and production began in 2002. 42,000 copies were pre-ordered in Japan when it was launched. Toyota had initially planned to install a turbocharger , but the plans were not implemented.

The second generation, based on the Toyota Yaris second generation, continued to only hit the Japanese market in 2007. On the American market, the Scion xA was replaced by the xD . This differs more clearly from the IST at the front. The second generation grew in length and width, but became flatter. In Germany it was marketed as the Toyota Urban Cruiser between 2009 and 2014 .
