The Toyota Sienna is a van that has been manufactured in the USA by the Japanese car manufacturer Toyota since the end of 1997, exclusively for the American market. It is built on the revised platform of the Camry . In the USA it was the successor to the 1st generation Previa . It has a more conventional front-wheel drive configuration than its predecessor and was revised and enlarged in 2004. The Sienna is often seen as a large-capacity taxi in New York .

At the end of 1997, Toyota launched the front-wheel drive Sienna as a 1998 model on the North American market, replacing the rather too advanced Previa with its mid-engine rear-wheel drive. The Sienna was presented with a 3.0 l V6 engine, type Toyota 1MZ-FE, which produced an output of 197 bhp (145 kW) and a torque of 284 Nm. It was built on the extended platform of the Camry and therefore marketed as the "Camry among vans". The Sienna was also shown to be the vehicle with the lowest fuel consumption in its class; it consumed 14.9 l / 100 km in the city and 10.9 l / 100 km on the country road. The cars were built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky in Georgetown, Kentucky . A year after its introduction, the Sienna grew into serious competition in the new Honda Odyssey .
With the 2001 model year, the Sienna was slightly revised. It received a small facelift on the front and rear. A new grille and headlight combination and new taillights with white turn signal covers gave it a more modern look. A revised center console enabled better operation of the heating and ventilation, as well as the electrically operated sliding doors. The engine received variable valve timing (VVTi), which increased its power to 210 bhp (154 kW) and its torque to 298 Nm.
This generation received a particularly good safety rating. The Sienna was the only van that offered side airbags and stability control (VSC) as an option. ABS was supplied as standard. In the tests carried out by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Sienna was rated “good” in all six front impact tests.

In January 2004, the second generation of the Sienna was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show . Manufacturing was relocated to Princeton, Indiana , and the Georgetown plant was converted to produce the second generation Camry Solara . To give the revision even more chance of success, Toyota commissioned chief engineer Yuji Yokoya with the project. Yokoya and his family drove the previous model over 85,000 km across North America to find any weak points.
The new model is still offered in the equipment lines CE, LE and XLE, but the new top model XLE Limited was added. All Sienna now have a 3.3-liter V6 engine, type Toyota 3MZ-FE, which is connected to a five-stage automatic and ensures that the car is classified as ULEV. The automatic selector lever moved from the steering column to the center console and works in a zig-zag pattern, similar to that of the Lexus RX . The new design gives the car a drag coefficient of 0.30. The petrol consumption improved to 14.1 l / 100 km in urban areas and 9.6 l / 100 km outside of town (with all-wheel drive : 14.9 l / 100 km in town and 10.9 l / 100 km outside town).
The Sienna, which has grown significantly compared to its predecessor, offers a wealth of new equipment details, many of which have been adopted by the competition. A good example of this is the third bench seat that folds flat into the floor of the car (front-wheel drive models only). It showed up first in the Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country , and then on almost every van. On the Honda Odyssey , this bench can only be folded down in one piece, while on the Sienna it is conveniently divided in a 60:40 ratio. Also new are the electrically operated side windows in the rear sliding doors, which disappear completely into the door (for the first time on the Mazda MPV ), 8 seats (only on the CE and LE), electrically operated sliding doors and an electrically lockable tailgate (standard on the XLE and XLE Limited, as an option for the LE).
A remote control for the door locks, a steering column adjustable in height and inclination, heat-insulating glass on the windshield and the front side windows, operating elements for heating and air conditioning for the rear seat passengers and tires with emergency running properties (only with all-wheel drive) are supplied as standard. All Sienna models from 2004–2007 also had a trailer coupling with a trailer load of max. 1,600 kg. Xenon high-voltage discharge lamps in the headlights (XLE Limited), cruise control , front and rear parking sensors , wide-angle exterior mirrors , navigation system with voice control, reversing camera, JBL audio system with 10 speakers and a DVD video system with a folding screen for the rear seat passengers were available on request .
Security aspects
The Sienna comes standard with ABS , Brake Assist (BAS), electronic brake force distribution (EBD), traction control (TRAC) and tire pressure monitoring. Side airbags and side curtain airbags were standard equipment on certain 2004 and 2005 models; since 2006 they have been standard on all models. The stability control (VSC), which was initially only available on request for some more simply equipped models, was part of the series from 2008 on all models.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the second-generation Sienna a “good” in all six categories of frontal impact. Models with side airbags also received a "good" rating in side impact, while the other models only achieved a "satisfactory" rating.

Changes from model year to model year
In 2006 the Sienna was again slightly revised and received a new front, a new side contouring and new taillights. Blue fluorescent electroluminescent Optitron control elements were built into the equipment lines LE, XLE and Limited. In the "XLE Limited", the designation XLE was omitted in order to create less confusion, and this equipment line was optionally available with a memory function for the driver's seat and side mirrors (also available in the XLE as an option) and electrically automatically folding exterior mirrors with built-in LED indicators. A Bluetooth connection and an electrically foldable third bench are also available on request. Side airbags at the front and curtain airbags for all three rows of seats are supplied as standard, the audio system for the rear seat passengers is no longer available. The performance data according to SAE regulations are now 215 hp (158 kW) (instead of 230 bhp (169 kW)) and the torque data are 301 Nm (instead of 328 Nm). Toyota now allows 87 octane gasoline for the Sienna.
In 2007 a new 3.5 l V6 engine, type Toyota 2GR-FE, with ULEV-II certification was introduced, which develops 266 hp (196 kW) and 14.1 l / 100 km in urban areas and 10.0 l / 100 km out of town (front-wheel drive model), or 14.9 l / 100 km in town and 11.4 l / 100 km outside (all-wheel drive model). Limited and all-wheel drive models have new seven-spoke alloy wheels.
In 2009 the Sienna remained largely unchanged, but its prices were reduced despite an additional "Extra Value Package" to make it more competitive. In the Canadian market, the base price dropped by a full CDN $ 1,500.
