The Vanguard (Japanese: ヴ ァ ン ガ ー ド) is an SUV produced by the Japanese car manufacturer Toyota . The Vanguard was officially launched on the market on August 30, 2007, replacing the previous Kluger V model . The Australian sister model continues to bear the model name Kluger .
The focus of the development of the Vanguard was on the goal of creating a luxurious SUV suitable for any terrain. Likewise, the new model should be able to join the chain as a worthy heir to its two predecessors. With this objective in mind, the Vanguard was created. The platform of the Toyota Estima Hybrid was used for the construction . Due to the resulting length, the Vanguard was then designed as a seven-seater. With permanent all-wheel drive, CVT or optionally a 5-speed automatic transmission, comfort should be emphasized and the vehicle should be made more appealing to the customer.
The Vanguard was also available in two different sizes, each of which was equipped with a specially designed engine. The small variation (4570 mm × 1815 mm × 1590 mm) received a 2AZ-FE - gasoline engine with a displacement of 2.4 liters and a power of 170 hp (4-cylinder). The large variant (4570 mm × 1855 mm × 1695 mm), on the other hand, was equipped with a 2GR FE gasoline engine with a displacement of 3.5 liters and an output of 280 hp (V6).
Spare tires were not standard on the Vanguard; these could only be ordered as an option. The repair kit was also only available as an option.
With a planned goal of selling 2,500 units per month, Toyota Motor Corporation had underestimated demand. Toyota received around 8,000 orders for the Vanguard within the first month of production.
On August 19, 2008, Toyota added a 2WD variant to its range of Vanguard. However, this is only available in the 2.4 liter version. Furthermore, ABS, ESP and ASR have been included in the range as standard for all Vanguard models. These were previously only available as options.
The model was only manufactured for export until 2012 and was completely discontinued in November 2013.
