The X70 was the first generation that no longer rolled off the assembly line as Corona . Like its predecessor, the Mark II was positioned in the upper middle class and was available as a notchback, station wagon, van and coupé. But the Mark II was also popular as a taxi. The model received the Good Design Award in 1985.

Engine selection August 1984 to October 1985 : Diesel: 1800 cm³, 2200 cm³, 2400 cm³ Petrol: 1800 cm³, 2500 cm³, 3000 cm³ LPG: 1800 cm³ ( 2Y-PU ), 2000 cm³ ( 3Y-PU )

In October 1985 the 1G GTEU engine was added to the engine range. This was specially developed for the sister models Chaser and Cresta . In the Mark II , this engine is only reserved for the GT and is identified with the addition of Twin Turbo . Toyota has now added its ECT-S to the automatic versions as standard for the transmission.

In August 1986 the Mark II was slightly redesigned inside and out. Toyota paid particular attention to the instrument panel and the arrangement of the individual switches in the interior. The dashboard was designed in a lip shape to give the driver the maximum possible overview of his vehicle. The in-house 1G-GEU engine was also offered for tuning companies in order to keep its costs as low as possible and to achieve higher sales.

The notchback sedan and station wagon remained in production until August 1988 and were then replaced by the X80 generation. The station wagon ( GX70G ) and van ( YX76V , YX78V ) were built with slight changes. Toyota took over the interior and other vehicle parts from its sister model Cresta , also the only 1G-FE engine still on offer .

As standard, the Mark II of the X70 generation got roof rails or optional luggage racks in February 1993. The LPG versions that were still offered until then were removed from the range due to poor performance. As a replacement Toyota brought 4-cylinder engines with 1800 cm³ or on request with 2000 cm³.

The station wagon and van continued to be built unchanged until 1997. However, since the notchback sedan had developed independently of the station wagon, the successor station wagon was allowed to run under the new and independent model name Toyota Mark II Qualis .

The new Mark II is the sister model to the Corona , the Cressida and the Chaser . In order to have a contemporary model again, the design was adapted to the current fashionable style. So the body was rounded and was in the style of compact cars . The coupe was abandoned.

Engine selection August 1988 to August 1989 :

Toyota Mark II 3.0 saloon

From January to December 1990, the Mark II was the best-selling automobile in Japan, outperforming the Corolla .

In August 1989 the 7M-GE was added to the engine range with a displacement of around 3.0 liters. Furthermore, ABS, TRC and ESC were now model standards.

One year later, the 2.5-L engines 1JZ-GTE and 1JZ-GE followed . There were also slight changes to the interior and exterior. This is how the two equipment variants Salon and Grande were created . Salon is the simpler version and was only available with fabric covers. The Grande is the premium version and only available in leather. The 1G-GZE engine was only installed in the limited Yamaha Edition ( JZ81 ) and then discontinued.

In 1992 the successor X90 was introduced on the market. The X80 generation was built unchanged until December 1995 and then discontinued.

After the persistently poor financial situation in Japan, sales of mid-range vehicles are now also very sluggish. So the 1BOX es and 2BOX es (also known as Kei Cars ) prevailed. The Mark II therefore had a very difficult time finding buyers. The outdated X80 generation was cheaper and, as a result, found more customers.

To counteract this, Toyota tried to reduce production costs. The extras that had previously been ordered separately were for the most part combined into various standard packages. In addition, Toyota succeeded in classifying the Mark II in favorable tax brackets. The only exception was the 3.0 L vehicles. The sports version of the Mark II was named Tourer (in Japanese: ツ ア ラ ー). Chaser and Cresta were still the official sister models.

The following engines were available:

  • 6-cylinder petrol engine: 3.0L, 2.5L, 2.0L
  • 4-cylinder petrol engine: 1.8L
  • 4-cylinder TDI: 2.4L

The Mark II X90 was built unchanged until February 1996 and was then replaced by its successor, the X100. Finally, Toyota launched the limited special model Regalia (Japanese: レ ガ リ ア) to draw attention to the successor model at the same time.

As before, sales of expensive vehicles in Japan were very sluggish due to several economic crises and stock market crashes. Toyota therefore decided to export some of the models abroad. The Mark II was also planned primarily for the Southeast Asian region. Thailand, Hong Kong, India and Taiwan were important markets. Some models were unofficially shipped to Indonesia and the Philippines.

The following engines were available:

  • 6-cylinder petrol engine: 3.0 l, 2.5 l, 2.0 l
  • 4-cylinder diesel: 2.4 l

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Mark II, Toyota offered the special version Trente (Japanese: ト ラ ン ト) until December . In April 2000 the X100 was replaced by the X110.

The success of the X100 abroad helped Toyota keep the model series going. But Toyota also received a large number of orders from the People's Republic of China, some of which had to be rejected. So Toyota decided to have the X110 built in the People's Republic and built the plant near the city of Shanghai, which was finally able to start work in June 2001. In Japan, as in China, there were only two 6-cylinder engines with a displacement of 2.0 l to choose from. The Mark II was available as equipment variants as iR-S , iR-V and G-tb . For its 35th birthday, Toyota brought the limited special model Regalia (Japanese: レ ガ リ ア) back onto the market (only in Japan). In October 2004, the Mark X then replaced the X110 in Japan and in the People's Republic of China, the Toyota Reiz .
