The Paseo is a coupé from the largest Japanese car manufacturer, Toyota, and was built from late 1991 to summer 1999. The model was produced in two generations: EL 44 and EL54. The codes "L4" (EL44) or "L5" (EL54) are used in common parlance.

From late 1991 to summer 1995, the EL44 was manufactured for the US, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia markets at the Takaoka factory in Toyota City . It was based on the Toyota Tercel platform , not the Toyota Starlet as is often claimed . Few of these vehicles exist in Germany today, it is estimated that there are well below 100 vehicles.

These few vehicles were presumably for the most part originally imported by Toyota Germany , the rest, for example, were imported by American soldiers stationed in Germany. An indication that indicates that the EL44 was possibly intended to be officially sold in Germany is the existence of German maintenance manuals for the EL44. In contrast to the EL54, the EL44 is not included in the statistics of the Federal Motor Transport Authority .

Types

The Paseo EL44 was manufactured in two different versions:

  • The version for the predominantly American market can still be found today in small numbers in Germany. From the start of production, the EL44 was equipped with power steering as standard, followed by a standard driver airbag and optional ABS from 1993 . Sports seats, an automatic seat belt system and a four-box sound system were part of the standard equipment. The Paseo was offered with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission . Optional components were air conditioning (based on CFC- containing R12 refrigerant until 1994 ) and a speed control system . Since stricter limits for vehicle emissions apply in some states of the USA , the engine output of the Paseo was reduced to 68 kW (93 hp) before it was sold in the states concerned in order to achieve better emissions.

  • For the Japanese market, the Paseo was called Toyota Cynos . The Cynos was also partially delivered to Australia, Great Britain and Russia. Differences to the Paseo are:
    • various other engine components (engine code 5E-FHE), thus higher performance (81 kW / 110 PS)
    • other headlights (separate parking light bulbs, no reflectors in the indicators, integrated fog lights towards the center of the vehicle)
    • other rear headlights (no side marker lights, partly different reflector color)
    • Right hand drive
    • electrically adjustable exterior mirrors
    • optional: electric windows
    • optional: rear window wiper

construction

The EL44 Coupé is a 939 kg heavy, front-wheel drive 2 + 2 seater. It has two seats in the front and two seats in the back for people up to 1.65 m in height. The drag coefficient (c w ) of the coupé is 0.32.

engine

The motor of the EL44 (motor identifier 5E-FE) is basically the same as that of the EL54 (only detailed changes). The main features of the 4-cylinder / 16-valve DOHC in-line engine with a compression ratio of 9.4: 1 and a stroke ratio of 74.0 / 87.0 mm are:

  • Engine identification 5E-FE
  • 1497 cm³ displacement
  • Output 101 hp (74.5 kW) at 6,400 rpm, 124 Nm at 3,200 rpm
  • Multipoint injection system
  • Manual 5-speed gearbox
  • Single-disc dry clutch

In autumn 1995 the second generation of the Paseo (type EL54) appeared initially as a coupé, which was followed in spring 1996 by a convertible. This series was also officially offered by Toyota Germany. The removable sunroof, power steering, electric window lifters, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, central locking, immobilizer, driver and front passenger airbags and ABS were standard.

Mica metallic paint, air conditioning, leather seats, heated seats and a Toyota audio system were available as options.

Production ended in the summer of 1999.

Body versions

There were two versions of the Paseo EL54: a coupé and a convertible. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority , there were around 3991 registered coupés and 799 convertibles in Germany (January 2011). In Germany, both coupé and convertible with the type designation EL54 were sold, both vehicle types have the engine known from the EL44 with the identification 5E-FE. However, its maximum engine output has been reduced from 75 kW (101 PS) to 66 kW (90 PS) compared to the EL44, while the maximum torque has increased from 124 Nm to 130 Nm.

A special feature of the Paseo Cabriolet is that each was initially also produced as a coupé, transported to the American Sunroof Corporation in the USA and only there converted into a convertible. Finally, the convertible produced in this way was shipped back to Japan to be delivered from there to the customer.

A special edition of the EL54, the Paseo S was a sportier version of the standard Paseo. The equipment features of this version were the 215 40R16 tires, a front spoiler from TTE , a TTE rear spoiler, light metal rims 7.5JJx16 "and a lowering of approx. 30 mm. A sportier version of the Paseo was also offered in Austria, here optical details were offered des Paseos changed in cooperation with Alpina Tuning.

For the Japanese market, the EL54 also existed again as Toyota Cynos . In addition to the EL54 with the engine code 5E-FHE (Cynos Beta), it was also offered as the EL52 (Cynos Alpha), in which the engine with the code 4E-FE (1331 cm³, 63 kW / 85 PS) was installed. This engine was also installed in the Toyota Starlet and Toyota Corolla , among others . In contrast to the EL54 Cynos, the EL52 Cynos was offered with a three-speed automatic transmission.
