In Quiz Taxi (2006 to 2008) and its remake Quiz Taxi Reloaded is a game show in which the candidates in a taxi cash prizes can win by answering questions from different areas of knowledge. Thomas Hackenberg hosted the show from 2006 to 2008. In 2012, the show was revived with Murat Topal as the host under the name Quiz Taxi Reloaded .

Concept of broadcast

The candidates are ordinary taxi customers. You get into a quiz taxi prepared for the game show and driven by the moderator . For the viewer, this gives the impression that the selection of candidates is random. One to three candidates can take part in a game (due to the maximum number of seats in the back row).

Rules of the game

Before the start of the game, the candidates give the driver their destination. On the journey, they will be asked questions from various areas of general education. You have to answer these correctly in order to receive a cash prize at the end of the journey. Unlike some other quiz programs, there are no predefined answer options to choose from. Some questions relate to pictures, spelling or short music or video clips that are played over loudspeakers and screens in the taxi.

The amount of money to be won increases in the course of the game:

  • For the first three questions, the candidates receive a prize sum of 50 euros for each correct answer.
  • For the next seven questions, the candidates will receive a prize sum of 100 euros for each correct answer.
  • For every further question, the candidates will receive a prize sum of 150 euros for each correct answer.

If the candidates do not know the answer to a question, they can use two jokers :

  • Telephone joker: Each of the candidates can call a person of their choice with their mobile phone and get help with the solution. If a participant does not have a telephone, one is made available to him.
  • Passers-by joker: Candidates can address one or more passers-by who are in the vicinity of the quiz taxi.
  • 550 Euro Plus Joker (since January 28, 2008): This joker is played when the candidates have already earned 550 Euro or more and have given their third wrong answer. With this joker, the candidates get their third life back, with the condition that only one of the candidates is allowed to answer or that they get a passerby to get in and take a guess within a short period of time. In this case, all three are allowed to continue guessing. However, if another question is answered incorrectly, the candidates lose the money they have earned so far and have to drop out.

If the candidates give no answer or an incorrect answer, they lose one of their three lives. If the quiz taxi has to stop at a red light, the candidates have the one-time opportunity to win back the passer-by joker if it has already been used up. For this purpose, the candidates have to explain terms to each other by pantomime, drawing or speaking with a plastic ball in their mouth.

If the candidates manage not to use up their three lives by the time they reach their destination, they win the total of the correctly answered questions. However, you can double your winnings by answering a master question in which you are not allowed to use the remaining jokers. If it is answered incorrectly, the candidates lose the money they have won so far. You are given 10 seconds to answer.

If the candidates lose their third life while driving, the score expires. You then have to get out of the taxi on the spot.

The car used is a Renault Espace customized for the broadcast. There are several cameras inside and outside . There is a permanently mounted external camera at the level of the right rear door of the car, and there are several cameras in the interior, the recordings of which are mostly shown while driving. The camera behind the right back seat is the only one that can be swiveled.

Furthermore, rails with white LEDs are attached to all window ledges in the rear of the car , which ensure better illumination of the passenger compartment. In addition, LCDs are attached to the headrests of the driver and front passenger seats . These show picture or video questions as well as the countdown towards the end of a question.

The taxi always drives in convoy . Further exterior shots are of a silver Volkswagen Multivan T5 following the taxi . A navigation vehicle is in front of it so that the quiz taxi does not move. This is controlled by a local taxi driver. The recording line is located on the passenger seat of the navigation vehicle and transmits information to the moderator via radio.

broadcast

Because of the low audience ratings, the Kabel Eins program was removed from the program for the first time. The program was broadcast in Germany from April 18, 2006 to June 2, 2008 and ran on weekdays from 7.45pm to 8.15pm. Last from 7:20 pm to 8:15 pm. From February 4, 2007 also on Sundays on kabel eins, and irregularly from June 1, 2006 on Sat.1 Comedy and 9Live .

The locations were Berlin , Munich , Essen , Dresden , Bochum , Leipzig , Hamburg , Aachen , Potsdam , Düsseldorf , Duisburg , Frankfurt am Main and Cologne . Most recently, the Quiz Taxi was also in Bremen , Chemnitz , Stuttgart , Halle , Bonn , Heidelberg , Mannheim , Wuppertal , Braunschweig , Nuremberg , Kiel , Lübeck , Würzburg , Hanover , Wolfsburg and occasionally in Mallorca and Kitzbühel .

The questions were faded in again for the television viewers and set to music by the spokeswoman Nicole Bull . Your voice has become known primarily through T-Mobile and Telekom announcements ("The person you are speaking to cannot be reached at the moment ..."). Nicole Bull also lent her voice to the official time announcement from Telekom.

From February 27, 2012, the program was continued under the name Quiz Taxi Reloaded with Murat Topal as the presenter on kabel eins . Topal also answered the questions. The rules of the game were identical. Only the bonuses of the respective profit levels have been changed. Instead of the original premium levels of 50, 100 and 150 €, the premiums are now only 20, 50 and 100 €, with otherwise identical questions.

Occasionally the moderator rated the answers as correct, or only partially correct:

In an episode broadcast on January 23, 2007, the question of the interpreters of the song In The Army Now was asked. The correct answer here was the status quo . This answer is not entirely correct as the song was interpreted several years earlier by the songwriters Bolland & Bolland themselves. Status quo was heard before the question, but strictly speaking, the little word "originates" in the question, which left a lot of room for interpretation. It was similar with the question of which group with Go West provided the template for a well-known stadium song. The correct answer was the Pet Shop Boys , but they covered the song by the Village People . However, it only became a stadium anthem with the version of the Pet Shop Boys.

In an episode broadcast on January 31, 2007, the two candidates had to name the first name of Prince William's younger brother . They agreed on "Henry", but this was rejected by the moderator Thomas Hackenberg. He claimed that only "Harry" was valid. However, "Henry" is the baptismal name of Prince Harry , "Harry" is just his nickname.

In an episode broadcast on February 28, 2007, it should be named which other federal state Bavaria shares the Franconia region with . The correct answer Thuringia was not accepted and Baden-Württemberg was named as the correct answer. Baden-Württemberg and Thuringia are correct.

In an episode broadcast in May 2007, military was mentioned in response to the question of what international technical term is used to describe eventing. However, this term is at least out of date and the correct answer would have been eventing .

In an episode broadcast on July 3, 2007, the question was asked which peace treaty was signed on October 24, 1448. The “ Westphalian Peace ” answer given by the passer-by joker was rated as correct. In fact, the Peace of Westphalia was concluded on October 24, 1648.

One episode from August 27, 2007 asked what war the Hollywood film The Patriot starred in with Mel Gibson. The correct answer would have been the American Revolutionary War . However, the candidates answered Civil War (American Civil War), which the moderator Thomas Hackenberg accepted as correct.

On October 26, 2007, the question was asked which European capital has the airport code TLX. We were looking for Berlin-Tegel , but its IATA code is TXL (TLX is the abbreviation for Talca, Chile). However, since the candidates persistently commuted between Cologne / Bonn and Frankfurt airports regardless of the abbreviation and despite the repeated reference that a European capital was being sought, the reversal of the letter may only have played a subordinate role for the outcome.

As a result of December 12, 2007, the question was asked which three federal states have direct access to the North Sea . Schleswig-Holstein , Lower Saxony and Bremen were given as the correct answer . It is actually correct, however, that four federal states border the North Sea, since Hamburg also includes the three small islands of Scharhörn , Nigehörn and Neuwerk in the North Sea . The candidates named the three required answers with the help of a passerby.

Representation of the route

The route taken by the quiz taxi often does not match the map that is briefly displayed before the next question, which is noticed by those familiar with the area.

Donation sums for the "Celebrity Quiz Taxi"

In September 2007 it became known that in the offshoot of the program “Promi Quiz Taxi”, in which celebrities play and donate the money earned, the broadcaster does not forward the full amount to the specified projects. Der Spiegel reported that a maximum of 10,000 euros would be donated to the specified organization. The rest of the donation has to be raised by the organization sponsoring the project. kabel eins justifies this practice with the advertising space that is made available to the aid organizations.

Quiz taxi in other states

The concept of the show originally came from Great Britain , where the show has been running on ITV1 since autumn 2005 under the title Cash Cab . The show is produced by Lion TV .

The format of the show was sold by Lion TV to many broadcasters around the world. There are comparable programs in the USA ( Cash Cab in the Discovery Channel ), in the Netherlands ( Cash Cab on BNN ), in Greece ( Taxi Girl in the Mega Channel), in Spain ( Taxi, Taxi on Telemadrid), in Israel ("מונית הכסף “), in Ukraine, Russia, Australia, France, Poland, Turkey, Indonesia, Japan and Norway.

Despite small differences, the rules are very similar in all countries. The biggest differences are certainly in the amount of the winnings. While the Spaniards have to be content with only 10 euros for the first question, the British get 10 pounds (around 12 euros) for it, the Americans 25 US dollars (around 19 euros) and the Germans even 50 euros. For the most valuable questions, the Americans only get 100 US dollars (around 76 euros), the Spaniards 100 euros, the Germans 150 euros and the British with 500 pounds (around 741 euros) certainly the most money.

In the Japanese version Cash Cab ( キ ャ ッ シ ュ キ ャ ブ , Kyasshu Kyabu ), which ran on Fuji TV in 2008, the first three seasons received 10,000 yen (€ 65) for the highest-value questions. With the fourth season, a fixed sum was won for each question answered, reaching 500,000 yen (€ 4,200) for the 15th question. There is also a third joker called Bookshop Chance , where the nearest bookstore is approached and the candidates have 5 minutes to buy one or more books to answer the question. From the 4th season onwards, only one book could be bought without looking into it beforehand.

Since October 2011 the format has been moderated as a quiz Taxi Austria on the Austrian private broadcaster Puls 4 by the former Taxi Orange candidate Max Schmiedl .
