The Lexus ES (initially sold as Toyota Windom in Japan ) is an upper middle class sedan of the Japanese premium car brand Lexus that has been built in several generations since 1989 .

The ES is based in all generations on the platform of the Toyota Camry or the Camry sister model Toyota Vista and therefore has front-wheel drive.

Since the beginning of 2019, with the introduction of the seventh generation, the ES has also been offered in Europe for the first time.

First generation (1989–1991)

The first generation of the ES (code name VZV21) debuted in January 1989 at the NAIAS in Detroit, where the Lexus brand was presented to the world for the first time. The ES 250 (for 2.5 liter displacement) was developed above all so that the Lexus flagship LS 400 was not the only Lexus model when it was launched.

The ES 250 drew 115 kW (156 hp) from its 2.5-liter six-cylinder. In terms of design, the ES was very similar to the parallel model Toyota Camry , but the ES had a more striking radiator grille, lavish chrome decorations, frameless windows and different rims. The rich interior included a stereo system with six Pioneer speakers, decorative elements made of real wood and leather seats. The transmission selection consisted of a 5-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission (ECT, Electronically Controlled Automatic Transmission). The latter had the speed levels "Normal" and "Power". Driving safety was guaranteed by a driver airbag and ABS .

ES 250

In September 1989 the two Lexus models ES 250 and LS 400 were launched in the USA. The ES 250 was praised as the “luxury sedan among sports sedans” and 1216 units were sold in the first month. The LS 400 was an independent model, whereas the ES had the image of a reconditioned Toyota Camry. In 1990 19,534 units of the ES 250 and 17,942 units in 1991 were sold, with the lion's share of the vehicles being equipped with an automatic transmission.

The ES 250 is a rare sight on the streets these days, especially because the model was only built for two years.

In September 1991 Lexus unveiled the second generation ES (code name VCV10). The model was now called ES 300, in relation to the increase in displacement to 3.0 liters. The new V6 engine developed 138 kW (188 hp) and accelerated the Lexus from 0 to 100 km / h in 8.0 seconds. In this generation, too, the ES was based on the Toyota Camry and weighed 90 kg more due to more extensive noise insulation and a higher level of equipment; the chassis was equipped with MacPherson struts at the front and rear.

The second generation was significantly larger (12.7 cm longer and 7.6 cm wider). The ES 300 was now equipped with projection headlights. The side view showed an “invisible” B-pillar and frameless windows. The trunk lid had an integrated spoiler lip, which gave the ES downforce at higher speeds and thus better traction.

The interior consisted of California walnut wood, a sound system with eight speakers and a keyless door locking system. The enlarged wheelbase gave passengers more legroom at the rear.

Production began on September 9, 1991, and the first copies went on sale in the USA that same year. In Europe, the ES 300 was not launched due to overlapping models with its sister brand Toyota . The second generation was a great sales success compared to the first and became the best-selling Lexus model. In the first year, the ES achieved sales of 37,886 units; This sales level could be maintained over the entire term.

Small model maintenance measures were repeatedly carried out and additional equipment features were added, such as a passenger airbag and a more powerful engine. From 1993 the manual five-speed gearbox was taken out of the offer.

In the 1997 model year, the third generation Lexus ES 300 made its debut with a wheelbase that was 5 cm longer than the previous model. The three-liter V6 with two overhead camshafts and 24 valves now developed 149 kW (203 hp) and was optionally available with a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic. From the end of 1999 the engine received variable valve control, and the output was increased to 157 kW (213 hp).

The fourth generation of the ES debuted in the 2002 model year, a year after the smaller Lexus IS was introduced. This generation of models with the internal designation MCV30 had increased in size. The new ES 300 should offer a higher image and a more luxurious driving experience by being less sporty. It was powered by a 3.0 l V6 with 157 kW, and the power was transmitted by a 5-speed automatic.

Facelift (2006)

In 2004 the ES received a new 3.3 liter V6 with 163 kW and was renamed the ES 330 . The previous 3-liter engine was retained for Asia and the Middle East. In 2005 the ES 330 received a facelift with a redesigned front and rear, clear glass lamps, projector headlights and a modified radiator grille.

This generation of models continued the sales success and, despite the relatively high price (2002: from US $ 32,080), became the best-selling premium vehicle in the United States.

The fifth generation (GSV40) debuted at the Chicago Auto Show in February 2006 . The styling is based on Lexus' new design philosophy, L-Finesse . The new ES version is called ES 350 . The model has the first 6-speed automatic in a front-wheel drive Toyota model, which is also used in the parallel Toyota Camry . The engine is a 3.5 liter aluminum V6 with variable valve timing that produces 203 kW of power. According to Lexus, the ES accelerates from 0 to 96 km / h (60 mph) in less than 7 seconds.

In 2009, the starting price for the Lexus ES 350 was US $ 34,470 net.

The sixth generation was presented at the 2012 New York International Auto Show .

It is powered by a 3.5 liter petrol engine with an output of 204 kW. The 2.5 inline four-cylinder with and without hybrid drive was added later.

With a wheelbase of 2820 mm, the body is 4895 mm long, 1820 mm wide and 1450 mm high. The curb weight is given as 1610 to 1660 kg.

Stars in the Euro NCAP - Crash Test (2018)

The seventh generation of the ES made its debut at the Beijing Auto Show in April 2018. In late summer 2018, the vehicle replaced the sixth generation in North America. The new ES has also been available in Europe for the first time since the beginning of 2019. From autumn 2020, Lexus will also be offering the ES in North America with all-wheel drive for the first time .
