The Peugeot RCZ is a 2 + 2-seater sports coupé from the car manufacturer Peugeot , which Magna Steyr produced for Peugeot in Austria. The RCZ was presented at the IAA 2009 in Frankfurt am Main and went on sale in Germany on April 24, 2010.

The vehicle had received numerous international awards , for example, five times in a row, the award of Diesel Car magazine 'Best Sports Car of the Year'.

The RCZ was discontinued at the end of 2015 without a successor model.

Model history

Technically, the RCZ was largely based on the Peugeot 308 presented in the summer of 2007 and was the French manufacturer's sportiest series model so far. Almost all elements of the concept car presented in 2007 were taken over into the series; the RCZ is a "real exceptional model" (compared to the usual Peugeot models), says Peugeot spokesman Marc Bocqué.

production

Due to the great approval of the RCZ study, Peugeot decided on series production and looked for a partner to produce the sports coupé. A separate production in the Peugeot works was out of the question for various reasons, whereupon one first negotiated with French and German companies until one went into cooperation with Magna Steyr from Austria. For Peugeot, when it came to choosing a production partner, it was important to have experience in small batches as well as great flexibility and variability.

The RCZ was brought to series production by Magna by December 2009. Since then the RCZ has been mass-produced at Magna Steyr; In the production of the new coupé, many steps are still carried out by hand.

The first number for 2010 was sold out at the end of August; By the end of 2013 around 55,000 vehicles had been sold worldwide. In April 2015, the head of the Peugeot brand, Maxime Picat, announced that the aim was to drastically reduce the model range in order to increase the profitability of the brand. As part of this strategy, the RCZ will be discontinued along with other models. Over 67,000 copies have been made.

Magna Steyr

Magna Steyr has been assembling for various automobile companies all over the world for many years; including for Mercedes, BMW, Saab, Chrysler and Aston Martin. It is predominantly convertible and coupé models in smaller series that are produced. In the production hall set up for the new Peugeot RCZ, up to 14 vehicles per hour were completed in one shift. All essential production requirements were therefore the responsibility of the Austrians. Around 700 employees were involved in production, including assembly, quality control and logistics.

A striking feature of the RCZ: the double curvature in the roof and rear window

Body / design

The body design was created by the German designer Boris Reinmöller and is often compared to the Audi TT because of its similarity ; stylistically, many borrowings were taken from the TT design. The double curvature in the roof and rear window as well as the distinctive roof pillars made of aluminum ensure an independent character of the RCZ body. In addition, the RCZ has a retractable rear spoiler, which should provide additional contact pressure at higher speeds. The rear spoiler is raised either at the push of a button or automatically in two stages: by 19 degrees at more than 85 km / h and by 34 degrees at more than 155 km / h.

The body has a value (drag coefficient) of 0.33 and is therefore only average.

inner space

The RCZ is officially a 2 + 2-seater, so the rear seats are very small for average adults and can be used more as emergency seats because of the lack of legroom. They can be folded down and thus provide a larger trunk; the luggage compartment can thus be expanded from 321 to 639 liters. The seat covers are decorated with color-contrasting stitching.

The steering wheel is flattened on the lower side, reminiscent of motorsport. The fittings are highlighted in gray. An analog clock sits on top of the center console, which is partially covered with black piano lacquer. Furthermore, the pedals and other applications in the interior are made of aluminum.

Furnishing

The standard equipment of the RCZ included electric windows, cruise control system with limiter function, audio sound system with radio, CD player and MP3 playback option, two-zone automatic air conditioning, acoustic rear parking aid, electrically adjustable and folding exterior mirrors, hill start assist, 18-inch alloy wheels , Tire pressure sensors and ESP (electronic stability program); the ESP can be switched off if desired.

The options that are subject to a surcharge (in Germany) included leather seats or a complete leather package in which the dashboard is also clad, a carbon-coated roof, xenon headlights including cornering light function and a navigation system.

Facelift

In January 2013, the RCZ was slightly revised as part of a model update and received, among other things, a new front with different bumpers and integrated LED daytime running lights as well as newly designed headlights and modified rear lights.

The basic prices in Germany amounted to 28,150 euros for the 155 THP, 30,650 euros for the 200 THP and 30,650 euros for the diesel version HDi FAP 160 (as of 2013).

From autumn 2013 a 199 kW (270 PS) variant was also offered as the RCZ R. It represented the top equipment in the model range. A 1.6 liter gasoline engine with a turbo charger is also used here.

Engines

The two THP turbo petrol engines with 1.6 liter displacement and 115 kW (156 PS) and 147 kW (200 PS) respectively from the RCZ are a joint development with BMW . The engines work with direct injection , twin-scroll turbochargers and variable camshaft control for the intake and exhaust valves. The same engine is used in the new BMW 316i 100 kW (136 hp) and in the Mini John Cooper Works 155 kW (211 hp).

Registration numbers

Between 2010 and 2015 a total of 8,992 Peugeot RCZs were newly registered in Germany.

safety

The RCZ is equipped with ESP and Brake Assist (EBA) as standard. In addition to the driver and front passenger airbags, there is a neck airbag that is incorporated into the seat structure.

The RCZ fully complies with the new guidelines of the EURO-NCAP crash test. A new pyrotechnic pop-up bonnet is designed to reduce the risk of injury to pedestrians in the event of an impact by lifting the bonnet slightly in the event of a collision.

RCZ-HYbrid4 concept

The hybrid version of the RCZ was also presented in Frankfurt; it is equipped with the 2.0-liter HDI-FAP engine 120 kW (163 hp). This drives the front axle, and a 27 kW (37 hp) electric motor drives the rear axle. This combination should allow a consumption of 3.7 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers, which corresponds to CO 2 emissions of 95 g / km.
