The Società Europea Veicoli Leggeri Sevel SpA ( European Society for light commercial vehicles ), also known as Sevel Sud is one since 1978 existing joint venture of Italian Fiat Auto SpA and the French PSA Peugeot Citroen SA for production of light commercial vehicles . At the time, the negotiations were conducted by the managing directors Umberto Agnelli from Fiat and Jean Paul Parayre from the PSA group. The stake in the company was 50 percent each for both companies.
Around 6,400 people are employed on the 1.2 square kilometer factory site in Atessa (as of 2019). The production output in 2018 was 296,000 vehicles. According to Sevel, this makes it the largest plant for the production of light commercial vehicles in Europe. It is also one of the largest companies in Abruzzo .
The activities in the Italian plant include the manufacture of light commercial vehicles such as buses , panel vans and flatbed trucks, as well as mobile homes . Vans for Fiat, Citroën and Peugeot of almost identical construction are manufactured. From 1984 to 1994 the Alfa Romeo AR 6 and Talbot Express (type 280/290) , identical in construction to the Fiat Ducato at the time, were also produced.
While Fiat terminated the French-producing cooperation Société Européenne de Véhicules Légers , also known as Sevel Nord , in 2012 and PSA was able to win Toyota as a new cooperation partner for Sevel-Nord, the cooperation in Italy for development and production will continue.
In 2015, Sevel Sud produced the five millionth vehicle. The six millionth vehicle, a Fiat Ducato Natural Power , rolled off the assembly line in 2018.
