The Fiat Ducato is a small van that has been manufactured by Sevel since the beginning of 1982 by Fiat in cooperation with Groupe PSA . The structurally identical Citroën C25 (today Citroën Jumper ), Peugeot J5 (today Peugeot Boxer ) and Ram ProMaster differ mainly in the engines used from the Ducato. As a replacement for the Fiat 900 , the Fiat Talento was introduced in 1989, a version with a shorter wheelbase in all variants that was only available from Fiat. With the introduction of the 2nd generation, the Fiat Talento or the short version was no longer produced, instead the Fiat Scudo started in 1996 .
The Ducato I gave the impetus for a large number of motorhomes to be produced on its basis to this day . Especially for this purpose, there are the Ducato and his sister models as a chassis with a single cabin and a drive head (chassis including motor without body for integrated RV ) or with additional cockpit, seats and upwardly and rearwardly open front cowl (for semi-integrated and alcove-Mobile ) .
The second generation of the Ducato as well as the Citroën Jumper I and Peugeot Boxer I were voted Van of the Year in 1994.

The Fiat Ducato I, Alfa Romeo AR6, Citroën C25, Peugeot J5 and Talbot Express (Type 280) was a light commercial vehicle produced by Sevel from January 1982 to August 1990.
The Sevel joint venture between Fiat and PSA in the commercial vehicle sector can be seen in almost identical vehicles from the original five and recently three brands of the two cooperation partners. The first Ducato generation was largely identical to the Peugeot J5 , Citroën C25 and the Talbot Express . In Italy, the Ducato was also offered under the name Alfa Romeo AR6 from April 1985 to December 1989 .
The Ducato and its sister models had a five-speed gearbox and steering wheel shift . Therefore, the driver's cab was always accessible without a conventional gear lever. Meanwhile, the competition took over this detail. In addition, the front-wheel drive vehicles could optionally be ordered with all-wheel drive . The Ducato I with the 2.5 TD with 95 HP (70 kW) was one of the pioneers of delivery vans with high top speeds. This engine was not available for the Peugeot, Citroën and Talbot models. The 75 hp (55 kW) 2.5-liter diesel engine without charging, however, was also available in the Iveco Daily I ; the maximum speed with this engine was 125 km / h. The 2.5 liter naturally aspirated diesel engine is considered to be durable, mature and robust. At high speeds of the diesel engines, the noise level in the driver's cab was very high. The front wheels were individually suspended from MacPherson struts and wishbones, and at the rear there was a rigid axle on leaf springs with telescopic shock absorbers. Depending on the model variant and equipment, the curb weight was around 1500 kg, so that the 2.8-tonner could carry up to 1300 kg. A model with a long wheelbase was also offered , just as the panel vans were also available with a high roof. Disc brakes were installed on the front wheels and drum brakes on the rear wheels. A brake booster was standard, but no power steering. The spare wheel was attached to the engine in the engine compartment with a screw on a plastic plate. The handbrake was operated via a brake lever to the left of the driver's seat. There was a storage box under the driver's seat.
The short wheelbase models were not sold as Fiat Ducato, but as Talento from March 1989 . At the same time, the Ducato Type 280 was revised and the Type 290 came on the market. The interior and technology have been improved and the window cut-outs in the doors have been changed for better all-round visibility.
In Great Britain - here with right-hand drive - there was the Talbot Express from January 1984 to December 1993 as the last motor vehicle sold under the brand name Talbot and as the successor to the Dodge Spacevan .
From July 1990, only the 290 was offered.
An electrically powered version of the Ducato Type 290 was delivered in a small series with the up to 43 kW (58.5 PS) DC motor T29C CLT250 (shunt 120/180 V voltage) from Leroy-Somer . The 28 series-connected lead-gel batteries from Sonnenschein DRYFIT TRACTION 6 V-160 Ah each 31.5 kg were equipped with a battery management system and placed in an 868 kg battery block in the middle of the vehicle between the axles, which reduced the usable interior height there. The Fiat Ducato Elettra still allows a payload of up to 750 kg with a total weight of 3190 kg. The range was specified as 70 km with a storage capacity of up to 130 Ah, the maximum speed in fifth gear was 80 km / h
In February 1994 production of the first Ducato, J5 and C25 ended.

The Series II (type 230) was produced again from March 1994 by Sevel and was again available with different bodies. The top-selling version was also the closed box van at Fiat . At PSA, the corresponding models were now called the Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Jumper. There was no longer an Alfa Romeo or Talbot variant.
The most striking feature of the second Ducato was the 2.5-liter turbo diesel engine with direct injection and 85 kW (115 hp), which came from and was built by Iveco . This was only available in the Ducato; Depending on the version, it enabled a top speed of up to 150 km / h. In addition to the optional all-wheel drive, a driver airbag and an anti-lock braking system were now available as options. In addition, there was now an optional automatic transmission .
In 1998 the 2.5-liter TDI engine was replaced by the 90 kW (122 hp) 2.8-liter id-TD; from 2000 there was the 2.8-liter JTD / HDi with 94 kW ( 128 hp) and common rail injection . This motor was now also used in PSA's sister models.
In April 2002 the Ducato II, Jumper I and Boxer I underwent a facelift (Type 244) in which, in addition to new engines, a new front with larger clear glass headlights was introduced. In addition, the interior and the instruments have been revised. The driver airbag became standard, as did ABS on the larger engines. A passenger airbag was offered as an option, as was traction control on the larger engines.
In August 2006 Sevel ended production of the second generation. This model is still in production in other markets.

Fiat Ducato / Peugeot Manager Mexico
In addition to production for Europe at Sevel, the model is now also being manufactured in the Iveco plant in Mexico for the South American market , as is the almost identical Peugeot Manager for PSA.
Facelift 2011
At the end of 2011, the Fiat Ducato, Citroën Jumper and Peugeot Boxer were carefully modernized in Europe. While the body was changed only insignificantly, the engines became more powerful and more economical. Thanks to a modified dashboard, the interior exudes more car charm. In addition to new controls for the air conditioning, there is also a new integrated radio. There is also a holder for a navigation system as well as modern two-tone seat covers and new side panels in the doors.
All engines now met the Euro 5 standard and the maintenance interval was extended to 48,000 km. In addition to the previous model, there were daytime running lights and hill start assist as standard . The base engine at Fiat was now the 115 Multijet engine with a nominal output of 85 kW (115 PS) in conjunction with a reduction in standard consumption of 14 percent to 6.4 l / 100 km. With the other new units, the consumption reduction was nine percent each. The 2.3-liter diesel engine was now available in two output levels with 96 kW (131 PS) and 109 kW (148 PS). They were also available with a start-stop system . With the 3.0-liter engine, the output increased to 130 kW (177 hp). An automated manual transmission was also available for the 2.3-liter and 3.0-liter engines . The 2.2-liter HDi engine from PSA was now available in three output levels with 81 kW (110 PS), 96 kW (131 PS) and 110 kW (150 PS).

e-Ducato from 2019
In 2019 the e-Ducato was presented as a prototype. For one year, 28,000 vehicles with internal combustion engines were monitored and the data evaluated with regard to mileage, variability, fuel costs, vehicle usage and temperature. In June 2020, the purely battery-powered e-Ducato was presented based on these analyzes. The range according to the NEDC is between 220 and 360 km. The vehicle has a 122 hp engine that is sealed off at 100 km / h and has 280 Nm. As with other Ducato, the bodies are available with a load volume of up to 17 cubic meters and 1950 kg. For the time being, the e-Ducato is available as part of pilot projects with selected customers.
