Production period: 2001-2017
Class : Middle class
Body versions : Limousine , station wagon
Previous model: Citroën Xantia
Citroën XM
Successor: Citroën C5 (China) (only in the People's Republic of China )

The C5 is a mid-range passenger car model of the French automaker Citroën , which was produced from 2001 to 2017.

In all versions of the C5, the power of the transversely installed engine is transferred to the front axle. The front wheels of the C5 (type DC / DE) are guided by wishbones and pseudo MacPherson suspension struts , the rear wheels on longitudinal swing arms . The suspension is an electronically controlled hydropneumatic system ( Hydractive  3 or Hydractive 3+).

The second generation C5 (type RD / TD) introduced in spring 2008 is equipped with a double wishbone axle at the front and a multi-link axle at the rear . The chassis can be suspended either with the nitrogen suspension elements of the Hydractive 3+ or with conventional steel spring / damper combinations. The Citroën C6 , the Peugeot 407 and the Peugeot 508 I were or will be built on the PF3 platform of the second generation of the C5 . Accordingly, the production took place together with the sister model in the factory in Rennes , Brittany .

Since 2017 Citroën offers with the Citroën C5 (China) only in China a classic model in the middle class, while the production of C5 has been set in Europe.

The C5 came in March 2001, initially as a five-door hatchback and in June 2001 as a combined break into the market.

The engine variants were 1.8 and 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engines from the EW series with 85 kW (115 PS) or 100 kW (136 PS) and a 3.0-liter V6 engine from the ES - Series with 152 kW (207 hp). A 2.0-liter engine with gasoline direct injection and 103 kW (140 hp) was also offered, but was withdrawn from the range after two years due to lack of demand. The diesel engines were the 2.0-liter engines ( HDi ) with 66 kW (90 PS) and 80 kW (109 PS) already known from the previous model, the Xantia, as well as a new 2.2-liter engine (HDi) with 16 valves, Diesel particulate filter and 98 kW (133 hp), which was previously used in the Peugeot 607 .

technology

Cruise control, electrochromatic interior mirror, steering bi- xenon headlights , AFIL , car phone, parking aid (also visual) front and rear, automatic transmission, leather upholstery, electrically adjustable seats and a GPS navigation system were optional. The C5 from model year 2005 (from autumn 2004 with type code: RC or RE) scored at Euro NCAP - Crash test with 36 of 37 possible points, the best overall result in occupant safety and has been awarded five stars.

Facelift

The C5 was revised in August 2004 (type code: RC or RE) and optionally received an electronic lane change warning system (AFIL). The function: If the vehicle marks a lane such as a roadway without activating the direction indicator. B. crossed the center line, the driver is warned by vibrating the relevant side of the driver's seat. The car is equipped with ESP , ASR and ABS as standard ; cornering lights that steer the vehicle were also available at an additional cost . Nine airbags protect the occupants in the event of an accident, including an airbag for the driver's knee and shins.

The vehicle has two-zone automatic air conditioning as standard and is equipped with the Hydractive  III or III + suspension system.

The C5 Airscape study presented at the IAA in Frankfurt in September 2007 gave an outlook on the next generation of the C5. The study, designed as a convertible, was not taken over into series production.

The market launch took place in April 2008. The five-door hatchback sedan was replaced by a four-door notchback model. The station wagon variant was retained, but instead of being called Break , it now traded under the name Tourer . What was also new was that for the first time buyers had the choice between two different suspension systems - on the one hand a conventional suspension, on the other hand the Hydractive 3+ suspension typical of Citroën .

Facelift

2010

In October 2010 the C5 was slightly revised.

Both the sedan and the station wagon received headlights with LED daytime running lights instead of the previously used bulbs and the previously bright red reversing lights of the rear lights in LED design were given clear covers. In addition, a new basic petrol engine with 1.6 liter displacement and an output of 88 kW as well as the two new diesel engine variants with 1.6 liter displacement (1.6 HDi) and 82 kW as well as a 2.2 liter engine (2.2 HDi ) introduced with 150 kW.

2012

In July 2012, the double angles on the front, rear and steering wheel were adapted to the current Citroën logo with more rounded shapes.

The MyWay and NaviDrive3D navigation systems previously offered for the vehicle have been replaced by the eMyWay system as the only option.

In April 2014, a higher variant under the name C5 CrossTourer came on the market. It is a station wagon with the look of an off-roader, similar to the Peugeot 508 RXH from the PSA group , but without all-wheel drive. It was available with a 103 kW, 120 kW or 150 kW diesel engine. In July 2015, the diesel engines were converted to the Euro 6 standard and, as BlueHDi, developed 110 kW (with manual transmission) or 133 kW (with automatic transmission).

In May 2017, production of the second generation in Rennes, France, was stopped. For the Chinese market, it will continue to be produced in a revised form by Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën Automobile in Wuhan .
