The Citroën Xsara Picasso is a model from the French brand Citroën that was presented in November 1999. It is based on the Citroën Xsara and was the first compact van from Citroën.

General

The Xsara Picasso was named after the Spanish painter Pablo Picasso . The painter's descendants also had the name Picasso trademarked as a car model name , so that Citroën had to acquire a license for this before it could be used.

The Picasso was initially only available with three engines: a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 70 kW (95 hp), a 1.8-liter gasoline engine with 85 kW (116 hp) and the turbo-charged engine known from the PSA group 2.0 liter diesel engine (HDi) with 66 kW (90 PS). At the beginning of 2003 a 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 16 valves and 100 kW (136 hp) followed, which was only available in conjunction with an automatic transmission .

In the spring of 2004, the Xsara Picasso underwent minor changes as part of a model upgrade. It was now available in the three equipment levels Style, Comfort and Tendance. At the same time as the revision, there was also a newly developed turbocharged 1.6-liter diesel engine (HDi) HDi with 80 kW (109 hp), which was replaced a year later by a 1.6-liter diesel engine (HDi) with 66 kW (90 PS) and also replaced the old 2.0-liter diesel engine. A 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 16 valves and 80 kW (109 hp) was also introduced in mid-2005. This version is visually recognizable primarily by the air inlet in the front bumper above the license plate.

In 2004, the Citroën Xsara Picasso took first place in the Vans category of the ADAC breakdown statistics.

Its successor is the Citroën C4 Picasso , which was presented at the Mondial de l'Automobile in 2006 and was on the market from October 2006. Until January 2010, the Xsara Picasso continued to be offered in Western Europe alongside its successor. As an inexpensive entry-level model, however, it had a limited range of equipment. In Germany, for example, from the end of January 2007, the panoramic glass roof and leather upholstery were omitted from the special equipment.

Citroën is also a sponsor of the exhibition "Picasso and the Theater" in the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt .

It was also manufactured in Wuhan ( People's Republic of China ) for the Asian market until 2010 . Until 2012, production continued in Cairo ( Egypt ) for the Middle East and in Vigo ( Spain ) for Eastern Europe.
