The Citroën ZX is one of the spring of 1991 offered to early 1998 passenger car model of the compact class of the French car manufacturer Citroën .
Citroën Project N2
PSA took over Chrysler Europe in 1978 . With the Talbot Horizon, Talbot offered a model in the compact class . The Citroën GSA was positioned in the lower middle class and was replaced in 1982 as a model in the middle class by the Citroën BX . The Citroën Visa was positioned between the small car and the compact class and since the Talbot Arizona was to replace the Talbot Horizon in the compact class, Citroën did not initially plan to replace the GSA in the compact class. The acquisition of Chrysler Europe had put PSA in financial difficulties and therefore all risky expenses were to be avoided, which also had an impact on the future model policy of Citroën.
In 1984 the decision was made to hire Talbot. The model intended as Talbot Arizona was introduced as the Peugeot 309 in the compact class. For the Peugeot 305 , which lies between the compact class and the middle class, the Peugeot 405 was already in final development as the successor model in the middle class. PSA therefore needed a new model in the compact class in the future and it was easier to integrate the Talbot Arizona into the Peugeot model range with just a few changed parts than the Peugeot. It was not until 1985 that the decision was made to develop a successor model for the GSA in order to close the gap in the model range in the increasingly important compact class. This N2 project was initially awarded to Bertone , who presented the first prototype in 1986 .
As with the Citroën AX, it should be possible to fall back on as many identical parts as possible from the PSA group. The hydropneumatics , which are common for Citroën , were out of the question because test arrangements with only one spring ball per axle had not proven successful in driving tests and a design with one ball per wheel would have been too expensive. The prototypes proposed by Bertone, based on the upcoming Citroën XM , were judged by the management in 1988 to be too expensive to produce and too noble for a compact class model. Citroën's design center in Vélizy then began with a simpler design development of the previous prototypes, which postponed the model launch again. The result was the Citroën ZX presented in 1991. In retrospect, PSA missed the opportunity to create a financially higher positioned model in the compact class and to set itself apart from the competition.
Model history
In March 1991, the ZX came onto the market as a five-door hatchback version and was the first Citroën model specially developed for the compact class. The three-door variant was submitted in October 1992 together with the sporty variant ZX 16V . Until then, the ZX Volcane was the top equipment, which was only available as a five-door in Germany and came up with a wide range of equipment.
From March 1993 the platform and technology of the ZX were used for the Peugeot 306 , which was much more successful than its technical twin. The high-roof station wagons Citroën Berlingo and Peugeot Partner also used this base, later even the ZX successor Xsara .
In Germany came as the base engine, a 1.4-liter R4 - petrol engine of the TU series with 55 kW (75 hp) from the PSA Corporation used. In other countries, a 1.1-liter R4 petrol engine with 44 kW (60 PS), also from the TU series, was available as a basis. The sports variant ZX 16V had a 2.0-liter R4 petrol engine with 112 kW (152 hp) and 16 valves from the XU series. Its output later increased to 120 kW (163 hp).
Compared to its competitors, the space on the ZX was more generous and it had a simple design that was rather untypical for Citroën. The lower part of the body was galvanized and thus effectively protected the vehicle from corrosion , which was quite atypical for this vehicle and price range at the time. Even today, many of the existing vehicles are still rust-free.
Another special feature was the single-arm windscreen wiper , which, however, did not prove itself, so that two wipers were used again in the successor Xsara . However, this feature can also be found in earlier models such as AX , BX , CX and Visa .
The kinematic steering rear axle was used for the first time on the Citroën ZX and subsequently installed on all Citroën with drawn trailing arms on the rear axle (including Saxo , Xsara). The maximum steering angle is 2 °.
In November 1993 the combination variant ZX Break was introduced in France , which was only offered in Germany with the revision in the summer of 1994.
Facelift
In July 1994 the series received a facelift . The revised vehicles can be recognized by their radiator grille, which was now externally separated from the bonnet. In addition, other aprons and a straight tailpipe with a trim instead of an angled one were sometimes used.
In addition, the offer in Germany has now been expanded to include the station wagon called Break .
In autumn 1997, the hatchback versions were replaced by the Xsara . In the spring of 1998, the Kombi Break and the Coupé followed, the latter only being a three-door hatchback sedan and hardly differing except for the most powerful petrol engine, which was only available in the Coupé. The ZX platform was also used again for the Xsara.

Citroën Fukang
The ZX was produced in the People's Republic of China by Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën Automobile between 1992 and 2009 as the Citroën Fukang.
In Beijing, these models were particularly popular as taxis. A visually altered version based on the Xsara, the Citroën Elysée with a longer wheelbase, replaced the notchback version in 2002, while the hatchback versions were manufactured several times with modernization until 2009.
