The presentation of the near-series concept vehicle Citroën Cactus at the IAA 2013 in Frankfurt am Main was followed by the official presentation of the series vehicle at the Geneva Motor Show 2014 and the start of production in April 2014 at the Spanish plant in Villaverde . Sales started two months later in France and Spain. A total of 7,633 copies were sold in the first month. The launch on the German market took place on September 13, 2014. The Citroën Cactus M presented in 2015 was derived from the C4 Cactus , which Citroën did not produce in series compared to the original plans, as the Citroën e-Méhari was a cheaper variant.

properties

Although the name of a relationship to the model C4 suggests the C4 Cactus is not built differently than Citroen's other compact cars on the PF2- but on the PF1 - platform ( C3 ) and has thus, apart from the wheelbase, significantly smaller sizes. In terms of price, the vehicle is also below the C4.

A special feature of the C4 Cactus was the first-time use of air cushions called "airbumps" with polyurethane coating on the front, sides and rear of the body. The manufacturer marketed these as protection against scratches and dents, which should absorb impacts and be easy to replace. The elements were black as standard, but could optionally be ordered in three other colors at an additional cost. In addition, Citroën offered a panoramic glass roof with a newly developed thermal insulation coating, which should make a blind superfluous. To save costs and weight, vent windows on the side of the rear doors replace retractable panes. In addition, the spray nozzles for the windshield are integrated into the windscreen wipers. The resulting reduction in water consumption enables weight savings through the use of a smaller water container and the mopping water immediately reaches the mop area.

The interior also contains unusual elements. In order to create a slim dashboard, the passenger airbag was relocated to the roof lining for the first time in a vehicle and most of the controls were combined in a central, standard touchscreen. In the variants with the automated manual transmission ETG, a middle section attached between the front seats suggested a continuous front bench seat. The rear seat bench can generally only be folded down in one piece on vehicles of the first model year, later an asymmetrically split variant was offered, sometimes at an additional cost. Thanks to these and other cost-saving measures and the use of aluminum in parts of the body, an empty weight of 1040 kilograms, which is low compared to the class, was achieved.

The design of the C4 Cactus won the Red Dot Award 2014 in the “Product Design” category and the “Internet Auto Award” in the “Editorial Award: Design” category.

The diesel model C4 Cactus BlueHDi 100 with the Euro 6 emissions standard has an SCR catalytic converter and an AdBlue tank.

Citroën C4 Cactus Adventure

C4 Cactus Adventure

In addition to the presentation of the C4 Cactus, Citroën also presented the C4 Cactus Adventure in 2014. This was consistently designed for use in the field with large, coarse off-road tires , barred headlights and taillights, ram protection at the front, raised body and large roof box with integrated searchlights. Citroën offers individual components as optional extras, but series production was rejected due to the lack of all-wheel drive .

Citroën C4 Cactus Airflow 2L Concept

C4 Cactus Airflow 2L

Another concept vehicle was the C4 Cactus Airflow 2L, which was presented at the same time. As the name suggests, it was a 2-liter consumer vehicle . The use of materials such as polycarbonate for the panorama roof or aluminum, especially for the floor pan, saved 100 kilograms. Here, materials were used that are not excessively more expensive so that they can also be used in series production and so that the price of the vehicle does not become too high.

Furthermore, the C4 Cactus Airflow 2L Concept has been consistently trimmed for aerodynamics. The front air inlets open and close in three stages if necessary, instead of exterior mirrors there are cameras and extremely narrow but large 19-inch smooth-running tires are used. A larger roof spoiler, slippery wheels and energy-efficient LED lamps were also used to save fuel. Another new feature is a hybrid drive that uses up to 45 percent less fuel in the city. The so-called “ hydraulic hybrid” is being developed jointly by Bosch and PSA and is to be used in the PSA Group from 2016. The new unit combines a gasoline or diesel engine with a hydraulic drive. The hydraulic system essentially consists of two hydraulic units and the associated pressure accumulators. The kinetic energy , which otherwise evaporates into useless heat when braking, especially in stop-and-go traffic, is stored in the two hydraulic tanks. With their support, the combustion engine can be operated at a more economical operating point when the load is low. All these measures resulted in the C4 Cactus Airflow 2L, which is just over 2 liters per 100 kilometers in terms of fuel consumption. Citroën will not decide on series production until 2016 at the earliest.

Rear view

In October 2017, Citroën presented a new C4 Cactus. Although the vehicle is actually just a revised first generation model , the manufacturer speaks of a new generation. Compared to the previous model, the position of the trademark on the front, which is now located in a radiator grille made of chrome struts at the transition to the bonnet, has been changed. In addition, Citroën revised both the shape of the rear lights, which are now more elongated, and the rear light graphics. In the side view, the "airbumps" have been moved down from the center of the doors and become narrower, and they no longer have any air-filled chambers. Overall, the use of matt plastics as decorative / functional elements has been reduced. Invisible changes concern the use of patented shock absorbers with an additional hydraulic limitation of the work path. Citroën markets this unique selling point in German-speaking countries under the name Advanced Comfort suspension .

The new C4 Cactus had its public premiere at the Vienna Autoshow in January 2018. The C4 Cactus reached dealers on April 14, 2018. In Germany, it had its trade fair premiere at the Chemnitz Motor Show.

Furthermore, all engine variants are only available with front-wheel drive. Compared to the previous model, the lowest-performing petrol engine with 55 kW (75 PS) was omitted, and in Germany there was also the variant with 60 kW (82 PS). Since then, the C4 Cactus has been available with a 96 kW (131 PS) petrol engine, which could initially be combined with a six-speed manual transmission , and from production in July 2019 only with the six-speed automatic transmission EAT6.
