After Jean-Pierre Ploué was appointed Director of the Citroën Design Center in 2000, he had the C3 designed under the direction of Donato Coco , who was already responsible for the Citroën Xsara Picasso .

The C3 was released in April 2002 as the first model based on the PF1 - platform of the PSA group , and later the models on the Citroen C2 , Citroen C3 Pluriel , Peugeot 1007 , Peugeot 207 and Citroen C3 Picasso emerged.

In July 2003 the C3 Pluriel was added to the model range, which can be used as a convertible or a pick-up .

Another variant of the C3 is the version called X-TR with the appearance of an off-road vehicle with a raised body, large black plastic panels and special interior fittings. It was launched in the summer of 2004. This variant has neither all-wheel drive nor a higher ground clearance than the standard version.

Facelift

In October 2005 the series underwent a facelift in which the front section, rear lights, dashboard and digital speedometer were revised.

The 66 kW diesel engine with direct injection and turbocharging (HDi) was replaced by one with 80 kW, and there was now a so-called bivalent version with 54 kW (with gas operation: 49 kW) that runs on both petrol and natural gas can be operated. A stop-start system was also available for the 65 kW motor with SensoDrive transmission ( Stop & Start ). According to the operating instructions, a roof load of 60 kg is permitted.

Engine range

All models had a 5-speed manual transmission as standard. The models with 65 and 80 kW engines and the 66 kW diesel engine could also be fitted with the automated 5-speed SensoDrive transmission .

In November 2009, Citroen introduced the second generation of the C3.

This model and the DS3 based on it replaced the predecessor C3 and C2. The new C3 was only offered as a five-door hatchback and was longer, wider and higher than its predecessor. The weight also increased slightly. At 300 liters, the trunk volume was just below that of the predecessor. The C3 received four stars in the NCAP crash test.

The car has electric power steering with speed-dependent steering assistance, internally ventilated disc brakes on the front axle and drum brakes on the rear axle. The VTi 120 and HDi 110 FAP models are equipped with disc brakes on the rear axle. A striking design feature is the windshield, which extends far into the roof, but was not part of the standard equipment.

A variant on the same basis is the C3 Picasso minivan .

In the course of a facelift, which was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2013, the C3 received a new bumper and a redesigned radiator grille. The logo has also been redesigned and now extends to the headlights in the form of a chrome-plated clip. LED daytime running lights were offered on request. The rear light graphics have also been redesigned. The more developed engines consumed less and new engine variants were introduced.

The market launch took place in April 2013.

Furnishing

The basic attraction variant includes side airbags at the front, power windows at the front, anti-lock braking system (ABS), on-board computer and a height-adjustable driver's seat. The rear seat bench and backrest can be folded down asymmetrically.

From the middle equipment line Tendance , air conditioning with manual control and a radio with MP3 and CD player are also included. Cruise control and head airbags are also standard here.

In the highest equipment variant, Exclusive , the air conditioning is regulated fully automatically. The interior includes a center armrest at the front and power windows at the rear as well. The exterior equipment also offers 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lights and rear parking sensors.

Between the beginning of 2011 and 2017 there is also the special model called Selection . The Red Block special model will be available from March 2012 and is only available in conjunction with the largest gasoline engine VTi 120 and diesel engine e-HDi 110/115 (airdream) .

Engine range

An automatic transmission is optionally available for the VTi 120. The e-HDi 70 Airdream is available with an automated manual transmission (EGS5). The HDi 110 FAP has a six-speed manual transmission. All other models receive a five-speed manual transmission.

The diesel engines have common rail injection and a turbocharger with adjustable turbine guide vanes ("variable geometry").

All engines are classified in emission class EURO 5 or EURO 6. In November 2012, the last engines from the PSA-TU family used in the C3 were replaced by more modern engines.

On June 29, 2016, Citroën presented the third generation of the C3 in Paris . In contrast to its predecessor, the vehicle is five centimeters longer, two centimeters wider and four centimeters flatter. The vehicle made its first public appearance at the Mondial de l'Automobile in autumn 2016; The five-door hatchback, which shares the platform with the Peugeot 208 , came to the dealerships on January 21, 2017 at prices from 11,990 euros. A WRC version was presented in December 2016. Citroën presented a revised version of the C3 on February 11, 2020. The market launch was in June 2020.

The C3 is available in 97 color combinations and can be ordered with color-contrasting fog lights and three different roof colors and three different roof decors. From the second highest equipment level, the small car receives the air cushions known from the C4 Cactus with a polyurethane coating ("air bumps"). Three three-cylinder petrol engines with 50 kW (68 PS), 60 kW (82 PS) and 81 kW (110 PS) as well as two diesel engines with 55 kW (75 PS) and 73 kW (99 PS) are initially available.

An automatic version PureTech 110 S&S EAT6 is now also available.
