The Cactus was a concept vehicle that Citroën presented at the IAA Frankfurt in 2013 . This was a further development of the Citroën C-Cactus concept vehicle from 2007. Unlike this model, the Cactus was now designed as an SUV in the compact class . What was the same, however, was the design, consistently designed for the lowest possible weight and few parts.

Completely new, however, were the “air bumps” with a polyurethane coating on the front, side and rear of the body. These air cushions are 5 cm thick and are designed to protect the body from scratches and dents. When pressed in, they automatically return to their original shape and should be inexpensive to replace if damaged. Another new development was a panoramic glass roof with a newly developed thermal insulation coating that makes a blind superfluous. On the rear doors, the side windows could only be opened to the side to simplify production and reduce weight, but could not be lowered, and the rear bench seat could only be folded down in one piece.

For the same reasons, the controls were combined in two touchscreens. Thanks to an automated manual transmission that can be operated with just three buttons and an electronic handbrake, there was a continuous front bench seat. The passenger airbag was relocated into the headliner to allow for a slim dashboard.

All these and other cost-saving measures, as well as the generous use of aluminum in the load-bearing parts of the body, resulted in a low curb weight and a production that was as inexpensive as possible. With just a few changes, the concept vehicle was presented in 2014 as the production model Citroën C4 Cactus and production started in the same year.
