Gustav Harmer junior (born October 29, 1934 ) is an Austrian industrialist and conservationist .

Industry

Gustav Harmer comes from a family of industrialists. In 1938 his father, the alcohol manufacturer Gustav Harmer , who worked in Spillern near Stockerau , bought the Ottakringer brewery from its previous owner, the Jewish entrepreneur Moriz von Kuffner , whereby the emigrants were not deprived of their fortune, but were able to take it from Harmer to New York . In 1962, after completing his studies, Gustav Harmer joined the company with his brother-in-law Engelbert Wenckheim . In the following years they gradually took over the management of the brewery from senior boss Gustav Harmer. Harmer headed the company as sole director for several years before he left the Ottakringer Brewery in 1995 and became General Director of Harmer Holding with the brands Kapsreiter Bier and Grieskirchner Bier . Harmer Holding closed the Kapsreiter brewery at the end of 2012 and in August 2013 the Grieskirchen brewery was sold to Marcus Mautner Markhof.

natural reserve

In addition to his work in the brewing industry, Gustav Harmer also played an active role in nature conservation and was, among other things, President of WWF Austria . In 1972 he provided WWF Austria with an office in Ottakring . In 1989/90 the WWF, the Donau-Auen National Park Association and Bernd Lötsch initiated the "Buy nature free" campaign in order to forestall Au purchases by Österreichische Donaukraftwerke AG . Harmer vouched for the purchase with his private assets. With the help of a live broadcast by ORF lasting several hours , it was possible to raise the missing donations (6.5 million euros) in a single night. 412 hectares could thus be secured as the core of the Donau-Auen National Park.

In 2000 he was succeeded by Helmut Pechlaner as President of WWF Austria. He is also Honorary President of the Austrian Golf Association.
