The Fiat Punto is a small car from Fiat . The first generation was produced from 1993 to 2000.

Model history

The Punto was presented in Turin in May 1993 as a three- and five-door hatchback sedan and went on sale in November of the same year. The design comes from Giorgetto Giugiaro . The Punto was the first small car from Fiat with a galvanizing of important body parts.

Initially the following petrol engines were offered: 40 kW (54 PS), 43 kW (58 PS), later 44 kW (60 PS), 54 kW (73 PS), 65 kW (88 PS), then 63 kW (86 PS) and 98 kW (133 PS). The Punto GT had a 1.4 liter turbocharged engine and an output of 96 kW (131 hp). There was also the vehicle with a diesel engine with 52 kW (71 PS), later 42 kW (57 PS), 46 kW (63 PS) and 51 kW (69 PS).

The wheels are suspended at the front on wishbones with MacPherson struts and at the rear on drawn swing arms (trailing arms) with coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers.

In April 1994, a convertible appeared in addition to the sedan, which contributed to the fact that the Punto was the best-selling car in Europe in 1996 . It also won the 1995 Car of the Year title . The cabriolet was available with a 1.2-liter engine with 59, 60 and 86 hp and a 1.6-liter engine with 65 kW (88 hp).

Facelift

A slight facelift followed in April 1997, including changed colors and seat covers, a slightly darker dashboard and modified bumpers. In addition, the 1.6-liter engine with 88 hp was replaced by a 1.2-liter four-valve engine with 86 hp.

Production of the hatchback sedans ended in August 1999, while the convertible was built until June 2000.

Equipment variants in Germany

Fiat Punto three-door (1997-1999)

The following equipment variants were offered: S, SX, ELX, Sporting and GT.

In 1995 there were also the equipment variants "ED", "EL" and "HSD". The latter had a particularly good safety equipment for the time with a driver airbag (from 1996 double airbag), ABS and four headrests. The "ED" variant ("ED" stood for Economy Drive) with a 55 hp engine was equipped like the "S", but with a 5-speed gearbox with a different gradation, which meant that the top speed was slightly lower.

The "6-Speed" variant was only available for the 1.1-liter engine from May 1995 and had a six-speed gearbox. The Punto Selecta had a continuously variable ECVT automatic transmission and was only available for the Punto 60 from March 1994.

There were also special models such as Cult, Sole, Team, Stile or Start.
