The Fiat Multipla is a van built by the Italian manufacturer Fiat from January 1999 to February 2010 . The platform and the engines of the Multipla come from the associated compact class, the Fiat Bravo .

features

As a special feature, the Multipla had a stepped bar directly under the windshield. The headlights for the high beam and the Fiat logo with five lines in the middle were built into this bar. From the beginning of 2001 the emblem with the word FIAT was used in a laurel wreath.

In addition to the design, the interior concept is also determined by something unusual. Like the later introduced Honda FR-V , the Multipla has six individual seats in two rows. It could be ordered ex works with either six individual seats or five seats and a built-in multifunctional box including a cool box between the two front seats.

The Multipla's body was based on a steel space frame concept developed by Fiat. Although this construction method causes higher unit costs in production, it requires significantly less investment in the production systems and can be quickly adapted to different body shapes. That is why it is well suited for producing variants in smaller quantities. The Multipla was the first vehicle based on this design, followed by the Fiat Stilo and the new version of the Fiat Bravo .

There is also a special feature of the motorization: In addition to the classic combustion engines for gasoline or diesel, the Multipla can also be purchased as a BluPower (from mid-2004: Natural Power ) with a purely natural gas-powered engine and four pressure bottles on the underbody of the vehicle, or as a BiPower with a bivalent motor. In the latter variant, it is operated with natural gas from three pressure bottles on the underbody of the car or with petrol. Due to the increased space required for the fuel tank, the trunk is restricted in this case by a spare wheel, which is sunk under the trunk in all other models. Since the bivalent engine has to be set for gasoline combustion, it loses a little of its power when it is run on natural gas.

In June 2004 the Multipla was launched in Italy (in Germany in September 2004) with a revised exterior design. The characteristic step between the bonnet and the windshield was eliminated.

In April 2006 there were other minor changes in the Multipla. New fabrics and a revised instrument graphic should upgrade the van.

Sales in Germany ended at the beginning of 2008 and production of the Multipla in Italy ceased in February 2010.

Press reviews

The first version of the Multipla Bipower was shown in the Different Roads exhibition . Automobiles for the Next Century exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York from July 22 to September 21, 1999 . According to MoMA, the exhibition showed nine innovative automobiles that could solve the growing social, economic and ecological problems of the automotive industry in the 21st century.

In February 2009, the magazine Der Spiegel named the Multipla one of the ten ugliest cars of all time.

In a vote by Autobild Online on the “Most embarrassing cars of all time” in May 2011, the Multipla landed in first place.
