At the Geneva Motor Show in the spring of 1950 , Fiat's first new design after the Second World War , the Fiat 1400, was presented as a four-door sedan and two-door convertible . It had a self-supporting body and a four-cylinder in-line engine with a capacity of 1395 cm³ and an output of 44 hp (32 kW) at 4400 rpm. The rigid rear axle, which was guided on quarter-elliptical leaf spring struts and had coil springs, telescopic shock absorbers and a stabilizer, was driven via a four-speed gearbox with steering wheel shifting and a split cardan shaft, which was synchronized to first gear . The front wheels were individually suspended from double wishbones . There were also coil springs, telescopic shock absorbers and stabilizer at the front, plus roller steering . Hydraulically operated drum brakes worked on all wheels, the cable operated handbrake was on the differential. The maximum speed was 120 km / h.

The Fiat 1900 , which was manufactured from 1952, had the same basic body, but with more chrome. B. a semi-automatic 5-speed gearbox, an engine with the corresponding designation, larger displacement and higher power, 80 hp in the 1900 B.

In 1953, Fiat's first passenger car diesel engine appeared in the four-door body . The four-cylinder in-line engine had a displacement of 1901 cm³, an output of 40 hp (29 kW) and was also installed in the Fiat Campagnola off-road vehicle and the Fiat 615 N light truck . The car reached max. 100 km / h. Despite the larger displacement, the model was called Fiat 1400 Diesel .

In 1954, both models were revised and were now called Fiat 1400 A and Fiat 1400 A Diesel . In the case of the gasoline engine, the output rose to 50 hp (37 kW), the top speed to 125 km / h, the diesel remained unchanged.

In 1956 the car was revised again. The engine of the Fiat 1400 B developed 54 hp (39.7 kW), the top speed rose to 136 km / h, the diesel was discontinued. Production ended in 1958.

The model was built under license in Austria by Steyr-Daimler-Puch from 1953 and was equipped there with its own engines with 2 l displacement.
