The Peugeot 201 was built between July 1929 and September 1937 in 142,309 copies by the French car manufacturer Peugeot in Sochaux . It was a newly developed vehicle model immediately before the Great Depression in 1929 and presented at the Paris Motor Show. Unlike some of its competitors, Peugeot survived the economic crisis of the 1930s and gained the image of an automobile brand from important designers, not least thanks to the 201 model.

The 201 was offered in many different variants. Initially, it was equipped with a 1122 cc four-cylinder engine that developed 23 hp (17 kW) at 3500 rpm and enabled the 890 kg vehicle to reach a top speed of 80 km / h. Later the model got an engine with 1307 cm³ and finally 35 HP (26 kW) from 1465 cm³ displacement were available. The wheelbase was 247 cm. The 201 got independent front suspension in 1931.

When it was presented, the 201 was the first Peugeot model to feature the later patented middle zero in the three-digit model name, which has been preserved to this day. At the beginning this 0 enclosed the cut in the sheet metal for the starter crank.

Peugeot 201-X

Peugeot commissioned the renowned sports car manufacturer Bugatti to develop a sports or racing version. Based on the version with independent wheel suspension, the Type 201-X received quarter- elliptic leaf springs at the rear, which is typical for Bugatti . A Bugatti engine served as the drive. The four-cylinder with only 944 cc was the Type 35 series engine - eight-cylinder derived. Like this one, it had an overhead camshaft and two inlet and one outlet valves per cylinder. Some specimens were charged with Roots blowers . The vehicle had a four-speed gearbox and drum brakes all around. No economic production could be set up with this engine. Only about 20 examples were built, most of them with a hatchback or cabriolet body. At Bugatti, the project ran as a Type 48 .

The Peugeot works driver André Boillot , winner of the 1919 Targa Florio , had a fatal accident when his 201-X 1932 got off the track during training for the Côte d'Ars hill climb near La Châtre .
