The Peugeot 605 (Type 6B) was an upper middle class vehicle from the French car manufacturer Peugeot . It was manufactured in Sochaux from July 1989 to September 1999 .

The 605 replaced both the Peugeot 604 and the Peugeot 505 . With him, Peugeot wanted to streamline its previously wide range of products in the middle class.

history

The platform shared the 605 largely with the Citroën XM , which appeared in the late summer of 1989, was developed at the same time and also came onto the market around the same time. Both vehicles had front-wheel drive (the 604 still had rear-wheel drive), although Peugeot decided not to adopt the hydropneumatic hydractive suspension developed for the XM .

The 605 was also conventional in terms of style. While the XM was designed as a hatchback, the 605 was only available with a notchback. The body of the 605 was created with the help of the Italian design studio Pininfarina . In essence, it was based on the lines of the Ferrari Pinin , which had been designed a decade earlier, and was similar in profile to the Alfa Romeo 164 , also designed by Pininfarina ; In particular, the light edges on the sides of the car were striking design features of both cars.

Although the international automobile press - including the German - expressly certified the quality of the 605, the car was just as unable to establish itself on the European market as the unconventional XM. The competition from German products turned out to be overwhelming in the market segment of the upper middle class, in which prestige played an important role. In addition, the 605 (like the XM) suffered from severe quality defects in the early days, which seriously damaged its reputation. Peugeot provided a remedy here and carried out a recall campaign in which, for example, almost the entire exhaust system was replaced, the wiring in the engine compartment was replaced and numerous other extensive and expensive work was carried out. This enabled the deficiencies to be effectively remedied, but the reputation of the 605 did not recover.

The 605 became famous as the official vehicle of French President Chirac and through John Frankenheimer's film Ronin . The most powerful version of the 605 had a V6 engine with three liters displacement, 24 valves and 147 kW (200 hp), the so-called "Europe V6" PRV engine , which had been developed together with Renault and Volvo. This engine was also available in a version with 12 valves and 167 hp. Clear identification features were the SV24 lettering on the rear and special 16-inch wheels. From 1997 both of these engines were replaced by a newer 3.0 V6 with toothed belt, which only made 190 hp. There was also a modern turbocharged 2.1-liter swirl chamber engine that developed 80 kW (109 hp) with charge air cooling, and the newer 2.5-liter turbodiesel with 95 kW (129 hp). Other engines were a gasoline engine with turbocharger and 108 kW (147 hp) and the small gasoline engine with 89 kW (121 hp).

Facelift

In mid-1994, airbags, seat belt tensioners and side impact protection were incorporated into series production.

At the beginning of 1995 the front and rear of the 605 were revised. As a result, the vehicle got larger-looking headlights and darkened rear lights.

Production of the 605 was stopped in September 1999. Its successor model appeared in spring 2000 under the designation 607 .
