La Chatre is a French municipality with 4109 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Indre in the Region Center-Val de Loire ; it is the administrative seat of the arrondissement of La Châtre and capital of the canton of La Châtre .

history

Although the origin of the place is not known, the place name - following documents from the 16th century - is traced back to the Latin castra . Around 1010, Raoul II de Déols created the barony of La Châtre for his son Ebles.

In 1151 King Ludwig VII burned the place down, who in 1209 submitted to King Philip August .
