location

The community is located around 28 kilometers southeast of Châteauroux on the Igneraie river , in the southeast of the Indre department, in the Boischaut-Sud natural landscape .

history

The place owes its name to the missionary Carterius , who lived in Saint-Chartier in the 6th century. The Abbey of Déols founded a convent there, which the monks expanded into a small fortress. This was acquired in the 12th century in exchange for the building of a parish church by the noble Chauvigny family and converted for residential purposes. The château served as a mansion until the 15th century and is remarkably well preserved.

During the French Revolution , the national convention decided to change place names that were reminiscent of royalty. The municipality of Vic-Saint-Chartier was first renamed Vic-les Eaux, then, in reference to the political grouping of the Montagnards , in Vic-la-Montagne .

The writer George Sand chose the location as the setting for her novel Les Maîtres Sonneurs , published in July 1853 . The plot is the life of a bagpiper in the late 18th century in the central French provinces of Berry and Bourbonnais and thus forms the background for the Rencontres internationales de Luthiers et Maîtres Sonneurs music festival , the largest event for early music, folk music and, which has been held annually in July since 1976 Instrument making in Europe. Held in the chateau park of Saint-Chartier until 2008, the event moved in 2009 to the park of the Château d'Ars in the neighboring municipality of Lourouer-Saint-Laurent .
