Nohant-Vic is a commune of 450 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Indre in the Region Center-Val de Loire .

geography

Nohant-Vic is located around 28 kilometers southeast of Châteauroux . The municipality is crossed by the Indre river and its tributary Igneraie , but the confluence itself only just occurs in the neighboring municipality of Montipouret.

Attractions

  • Maison de George Sand - Theproperty, builtfor the governor of Vierzon in thelate 17th century, was purchased in 1793 by Madame Dupin de Francueil , the writer's grandmother. George Sand spent her childhood and youth in Nohant-Vic and wrote much of her work there. Her guests in Nohant included Franz Liszt and Marie d'Agoult , Balzac , Chopin , Flaubert , and the painter Delacroix , who had a studio there. The property is now owned by the state and is maintained by the National Monuments Administration (Center des monuments nationaux).
  • Vic frescoes - The locality of Vic (from the Latin Vicus ) is of Gallo-Roman origin. The settlement was probably Christianized early and has belongedto the powerful Benedictine Abbey of Déolssince the Gregorian reforms around 1100. The small parish church of Saint-Martin at that time consisted of a simple nave and a rectangular choir. In the early 12th century the semicircular apse and the southern side chapel were added. In 1849 frescoes from the 12th century were discovered under the whitewash. The paintings cover both sides of a wall between the nave and the choir, the walls of the choir and the walls and ceiling of the apse. The main theme of the cycle of pictures is “Fall and redemption of the human race”. Christ is enthroned on the wall of the nave, and at his feet isthe mystical lambin a medallion . The sun and moon are depicted on the descent from the cross on the right of the wall.

Personalities

  • Marie-Aurore de Saxe (1748–1821), daughter of Moritz Graf von Sachsen (1696–1750), who bought the property in Nohant in 1793 .
  • Aurore Dupin, called George Sand (1804–1876), granddaughter of the previous one, spent part of her life in Nohant. She died on her country estate and was buried in the garden of the property.
