The Dodge Dakota (from model year 2011 Ram Dakota ) - is a pickup model from the US auto company Chrysler . When it was introduced in 1987, the Dodge Ram , which had been on the market since 1981, was given a second pickup. The Dakota was nominated for North American Truck of the Year award in 2000.

The Dakota was always bigger than all other smaller pickups ( Ford Ranger , Chevrolet S-10 , Toyota Tacoma , Nissan Frontier ) and with its introduction established the new class of "midsize trucks". Competitors from Nissan, Chevrolet and Toyota also rose to this position by 2005. The Chrysler Group enlarged the size of the Dakota from 2005 onwards, so that it was finally only offered with an extended or crew cab (one and a half or double cab) - with a length of 5.56 m and as a double cab with a shortbed by 5.70 m closer to the "full-size pickups" ( Ford F-150 , Ram 1500 or Chevrolet Silverado ) than the mid-range competitors. In addition, the Dakota was the only one in its class to offer a loading area of 5.4 feet in length as standard in addition to the double cab. For a long time, the Dakota was the only medium-sized pickup to have an optional V8 engine.

In 2011 the production of the Dakota was stopped.

Dodge Dakota Extended Cab (1994-1996)

At the time, the Dakota was presented as the first medium-sized pickup that combined the ease of use and the relatively low consumption of a compact pickup with the loading space and the transport capacity of a "full-size pickup".

The first generation was produced from 1987 to 1996 and was available with both an in-line four and a V6 engine. The Dakota was offered either with a manual 5-speed transmission or with a 4-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive was available in conjunction with a six-cylinder unit. In addition, you had the choice between a 2 m and a 2.4 m long loading area. From 1989 to 1991 the Dakota was also built as a convertible version with a manually foldable roof. A 5.2 liter V8 engine was available from 1991.

Dakota (1997-2004)

Three years after the launch of the new Dodge Ram, an all-new Dakota was also launched. It had a more aggressive design and a new 5.9-liter Magnum V8 with 186 kW (250 hp), which was unique in its class and could compete with the engines of many "full-size pickups".

From 2000 four-door Quad-Cab models were also available and the old 5.2-liter V8 of the first generation was replaced by a new 4.7-liter SOHC Power Tech Magnum V8. From 2002, the Dakota was no longer offered with four-cylinder engines, as these had recently sold considerably less than the much more powerful V6 and V8 engines. In 2004, the old 3.9-liter V6 was finally replaced by a completely new and more powerful 3.7-liter V6, the large 5.9-liter V8 of the Dakota was omitted.

The Dakota, which was renewed in the summer of 2004 for the 2005 model year, no longer shared the platform with the Dodge Durango like its predecessor , since the Durango , which appeared in autumn 2003, is now based on the platform of the Dodge Ram. The third Dakota was available with a six-cylinder and optionally with two eight-cylinder engines. The already well-known 3.7-liter V6 with 157 kW (210 PS) and the 4.7-liter V8 with 175 kW (230 PS) also became a 4.7-liter high-output V8 with 191 kW (260 PS) put aside. The curb weight is given as 1894-2091 kg.

The V6 and the smaller V8 were available with a 5-speed automatic or a manual 6-speed gearbox. From 2006 this only applied to the V6 model. In order to freshen up the styling, the third generation of the model was no longer available as a regular cab (= two-door with 2-3 seats), but only as a club-cab (= two-door with 4-6 seats) or as a quad-cab ( = Four-door with 4-6 seats).

Dodge Dakota Double-Cab (2007-2011)

With the 2008 model year, the Dakota received a facelift that was presented at the Chicago Auto Show in spring 2007. In addition to a few minor changes to the front and the interior, the range of equipment had been revised. Furthermore, the permissible trailer load had been increased, which means that the Dakota now had the "highest trailer load in its class" in this regard. The 4.7-liter V8 engine had also been revised and now developed 225 kW (306 hp).

In the 2011 model year, the Dakota was sold under the Ram Trucks brand as the Ram Dakota. After that, production was stopped.

The Dakota was built at Warren Truck Assembly in Warren, Michigan .
