-ingerode

The suffix -ingerode (occasionally in Westphalia -ingrade ), which is a combination of the endings -ingen and -rode , is an ending of place names that is often found in Eichsfeld and on the northern edge of the Harz .

origin

The origin of the ending lies in the eastern part of southern Lower Saxony , from where it spread through secular and spiritual landlords from the region to the north and east of the Harz. The founding phase of localities with this ending can be found in the area between the 10th and 12th centuries, which means that they are comparatively young clearing settlements. A disproportionate number of these settlements fell in the 13th to 15th centuries. In the eastern district of Goslar and the southern district of Wolfenbüttel in Lower Saxony, in particular , desert areas with this name are often found: The field mark of the town of Harlingerode in the city of Bad Harzburg alone shows Döringerode , Göttingerode before the re-establishment in 1935 and Isingerode, three desert areas with this ending in one area of around 12 square kilometers.

The distribution area of ​​the ending extends from southeastern Lower Saxony and western Saxony-Anhalt to northwest Thuringia and the extreme northeast of Hesse ( Witzenhausen ).

With the exception of Wernigerode , these are all villages that usually emerged from a small nucleus and have expanded over time. In addition to Wernigerode, the city ​​of Elbingerode (Harz) with over 5,000 inhabitants, Harlingerode with approx. 3,000 inhabitants and Darlingerode and Gerblingerode with approx. 2,000 inhabitants are the largest localities with this ending.
