Werningerode is a district of the rural community Sonnenstein in the Thuringian district of Eichsfeld .

location

The place Werningerode is located in the eastern part of the district, about 22 kilometers (as the crow flies ) northeast of the district town of Heilbad Heiligenstadt . The village lies in a basin through which the meadow ditch flows. To the south, west and east the area borders on the Schwarzburger Holz . To the north, the basin is surrounded by an agriculturally used ridge. The highest elevation is the Steinberg ( 385.5  m above sea level ), the Schwarzburger Warte ( 373.4  m above sea level ) and the Bauerberg ( 361.6  m above sea level ) are also worth mentioning .

history

Werningerode is one of the Rodedörfern in the southern Harz. The roding villages in the area date from the 10th to 12th centuries. The name refers to the clearing of wooded areas. Between Werningerode and Epschenrode, the Gaug border stretches between the old Helmegau and the Ohmfeldgau. In the immediate vicinity there was a medieval border wall with two waiting towers (Schwarzburger Warte and Werningeröder Warte).

  • First documented mention in 1287
  • around 1450 interest and half of the manor go to the barons of Werthern as an accessory to the Burglehn Klettenberg. The other half remains in the possession of the Aldendorf family
  • The church was built around 1450; large parts of the ground floor have been preserved to this day.
  • 1521 Hans (the rich) Freiherr von Werthern buys the manor from Christoph Aldendorf
  • In 1617 Hans von Werthern divided the entire property between his three sons and thus founded the Beichlingen, Brücken and Wiehe lines, which later split into several branches. At that time the oldest family property around Großwerther and Kleinwerther as well as the goods Brücken, Esperstedt, Berga, Werningerode, Großwechselungen, Haferungen and the Burglehn Klettenberg fell on the Brücken line.
  • around 1630 as a result of the Thirty Years War, the place and the church building are severely destroyed
  • between 1650 and 1850 many residents served as mercenaries in the Prussian and Hanover armies
  • 1696 Reconstruction of the church in its present form from the then existing church ruins by the parish and Major Louis Freiherr von Werthern
  • 1757 Werningerode is haunted by Austrian troops as a result of the Seven Years' War. Some citizens refuse to pay the required war taxes. The shepherd Kallmeyer is arrested by Croatian troops after a dispute on the church tower in Scharzfeld and later released.
  • 1807–1813 Werningerode belongs to the Kingdom of Westphalia . The community has to pay a large number of war taxes and has to take out a loan from the manorial leaseholder Wallies. At least two residents take part in the Wars of Liberation on the Prussian side. In 1863 the two veterans Christian and Philipp Fischer are honored.
  • 1858–1872 the interior of the church is redesigned
  • In 1859 the von Werthern family sold the manor to the farmer Kühne
  • In 1856 the master miller Carl Riechel was slain by his son-in-law August Pfeifer. As a result, the Apelsmühle located on the Mühlgraben will give up. In 1881 the mill and the land belonging to it are legally sold to the farmer August Kallmeyer. As a result, the mill building with the associated homestead is completely demolished.
  • April 5, 1945, about a month before the unconditional surrender, Werningerode was handed over to the American troops without a fight.
  • July 1, 1950, with the formation of the Steinrode community from Werningerode and Epschenrode, Werningerode is now called Steinrode I.

The village was merged with the neighboring town of Epschenrode on July 1, 1950 to form the municipality of Steinrode as part of the regional reform at the beginning of the 1950s and the associated reorganization of the then Worbis district . It was a member community in the Eichsfeld-Südharz administrative community . With their dissolution, the place came on December 1, 2011 to the rural community Sonnenstein.

Culture and sights

Werningerode owns a listed village church that was restored in 1696. The south facade shown in the photo consists of large parts of medieval sandstone ashlar masonry. During renovation work in 2008, three Gothic windows were found. The tower was built in 1696 in oak framework. The interior was redesigned in the classicist style between 1858 and 1872. There are verifiably 4 grave sites from the 18th century in the building.

Hiking trails

Circular hiking trails and a children's hiking trail have been laid out around Werningerode. From the "Brockenblick" lookout point, a distant view of the Harz Mountains and the Goldene Aue is possible.
