history
Until 1945 Epschenrode and Werningerode were parishes of the Prussian district Grafschaft Hohenstein . 1945 to 1949 the places were part of the Soviet occupation zone and from 1949 the GDR. The municipality of Steinrode was created on July 1, 1950 as part of a municipality reform through the merger of the towns of Epschenrode and Werningerode. From 1961 until the turnaround and reunification in 1989/1990 Steinrode was affected by the closure of the nearby inner-German border. Since 1990 the place belongs to the re-established state of Thuringia. On December 1, 2011, the community of Steinrode merged with the seven other communities of the Eichsfeld-Südharz administrative community to form the rural community of Sonnenstein.

Others
Steinrode is in the distribution area of the northern Thuringian dialect, which is one of the Thuringian-Upper Saxon dialects . In addition, it should be noted in terms of language that, despite the threshold to the East Westphalian dialect, no large vocabulary was included. This only worked in individual farmsteads and small hamlets between Stöckey and Mackenrode , although they had the same language skills .
