Epschenrode is a part of the rural community Sonnenstein in the district of Eichsfeld . It is one of the few villages in the Eichsfeld district that does not belong to the historic Eichsfeld .

location

The place Epschenrode is located in the eastern part of the district, about 23 kilometers (as the crow flies ) northeast of the district town of Heilbad Heiligenstadt . The highest point is the Bauerberg ( 361.6  m above sea level ). The Röstegraben , a tributary of the Ohe, rises on the outskirts . The Ohe itself rises from a small pond in the village.

history

The first mention of Epschenrode goes back to a document by Emperor Otto I from the year 973. With the towns of Großbodungen, Wallrode, Kraja and Hauröden, the Großbodungen office was established at the end of the Middle Ages and remained a Saxon fief until the beginning of the 17th century. In 1632 the Counts of Schwarzburg and Stolberg received the office as heirs of the Hohenstein Counts. In 1676 the Counts of Schwarzburg got the village of Epschenrode with the office of Großbodungen. In 1816 the Counts of Schwarzburg ceded the office to Prussia. This resulted in the place being part of the Grafschaft Hohenstein district (today Nordhausen district). In Epschenrode there was a Vorwerk of the domain Großbodungen. This was owned by the princes of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen until it was sold.

On April 10, 1945 the "Battle of Epschenrode" took place. In the village there were still declining, lightly armed Wehrmacht units. When they shot at an advancing US tank, Epschenrode was shot at by tanks and US artillery. Eight German soldiers fell and the local farmer's leader was shot dead by the Americans who had entered his home. There are German soldiers' graves in the Epschenrode cemetery.

The village was merged with the neighboring village of Werningerode on July 1, 1950 to form the municipality of Steinrode as part of the regional reform at the beginning of the 1950s and the associated reorganization of the then Worbis district . With their dissolution, the place came on December 1, 2011 to the rural community Sonnenstein.
