The municipality of Sonnenstein is a rural municipality in the north of the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia . The seat of the municipal administration is Weißenborn-Lüderode .

The rural community of Sonnenstein is located in the southern foreland of the Harz Mountains directly on the state border with Lower Saxony . Neighboring communities are Herzberg am Harz and Bad Lauterberg in Harz in the district of Göttingen in the north, Hohenstein in the district of Nordhausen in the east, Am Ohmberg , Haynrode , Leinefelde-Worbis , Brehme and Ecklingerode in the district of Eichsfeld in the south and Duderstadt in the district of Göttingen in the west.
The rural community is named after the Sonnenstein , a 486 meter high mountain near Holungen. A so-called “Skywalk” was built on this mountain top in 2017. It is a walkway with a glass bottom. This is 14 meters long and rises a good 9 meters above the cliffs of the Sonnenstein. This created a new tourist attraction in the community. Sonnenstein is located around 45 kilometers east of Göttingen and around 30 kilometers west of Nordhausen .

The municipality of Sonnenstein consists of the following eight localities (the population on June 30, 2019 in brackets):
- Bockelnhagen with the districts Bockelnhagen (286 E.) and Weilrode (70 E.)
- Holungen (809 E.)
- Jützenbach (480 E.)
- Silkerode (355 E.)
- Steinrode with the districts Epschenrode (121 E.) and Werningerode (357 E.)
- Stockey (394 E.)
- Weißenborn-Lüderode (1299 E.) with the district of Kloster Gerode and
- Clamp (373 E.)
history
Sonnenstein was formed on December 1, 2011 from the merger of the communities of Bockelnhagen , Holungen , Jützenbach , Silkerode , Steinrode , Stöckey , Weißenborn-Lüderode and Zwinge . The locations were already functionally united in the Eichsfeld-Südharz administrative community.
