The local elections in Thuringia 2012 took place on April 22, 2012. The mayors of the six independent cities of the state, the district administrators in 16 of the 17 districts and 88 full-time and 32 honorary mayors of cities and municipalities in Thuringia were elected. The district election in the Saale-Orla district took place in January 2012.

According to the State Statistical Office, 377 candidates, including 60 women, applied for a total of 142 mandates. By contrast, not a single one had been found in Hirschberg in the Saale-Orla district and in Jonaswalde in Altenburger Land. Here the voters could write down their own suggestions on the ballot papers. In addition, the municipal councils were elected in six newly tailored municipalities. Around 300 candidates ran on lists of parties, voter groups and organizations.

A run-off election took place on May 6, 2012 in the districts and cities in which no applicant achieved an absolute majority.

The turnout increased slightly compared to the last elections in 2006 and was 46.6% in the elections for the district administrators and mayors of the independent cities (2006: 42.3%), in the mayoral elections in the cities and municipalities belonging to the district it was 51 .6% (2006: 48.4%).

Lord Mayor of the independent cities

Eisenach

In Eisenach , the incumbent mayor Matthias Doht (SPD), who was involved in an affair, failed with only 17.4% of the vote in the first ballot. Raymond Walk (independent, CDU list; 38.9%) and Katja Wolf (Die Linke; 24.4%) entered the runoff election. A total of five applicants competed. In the runoff election, Wolf prevailed with 7,622 votes (51.6%) against Walk (7,144 votes / 48.4%). The turnout was 42.4% (35,166 eligible voters, 14,907 voters, 14,766 valid votes).

Erfurt

Seven applicants competed in the state capital Erfurt . Incumbent Andreas Bausewein (SPD) was re-elected in the first ballot with 59.2% of the vote.

Gera

In Gera , incumbent Norbert Vornehm (29.7%) and challenger Viola Hahn (47.6%) entered the runoff election. Noble was supported by the SPD, Left and Greens, Hahn by the CDU, FDP and AfG . There were four candidates in total. In the runoff election, Hahn prevailed with 21,444 votes (59.7%) against Noble (14,488 votes / 40.3%). The turnout was 43.8% (83,212 eligible voters, 36,439 voters, 35,932 valid votes).

Jena

In Jena , the second largest city in Thuringia, the incumbent Mayor Albrecht Schröter (SPD) just missed the absolute majority with 48.8% in the first ballot. He moved into the runoff election against the CDU challenger Dietmar Schuchardt, who received 17.9% of the vote. There were a total of seven applicants to choose from. In the runoff election Schröter prevailed with 20,563 votes (72.9%) against Schuchardt (7,647 votes / 27.1%). The turnout was 33.6% (85,507 eligible voters, 28,690 voters, 28,210 valid votes).

Suhl

The incumbent incumbent, Jens Triebel , with 50.7% of the votes, almost reached the required absolute majority in the first ballot. Three candidates had stood for election.

Weimar

Incumbent Stefan Wolf received 43.8% of the vote in the first ballot, the challenger Martin Kranz from the weimarwerk civic alliance got 37.% and thus also reached the runoff election. There were four applicants in total. In the runoff election, Wolf prevailed with 12022 votes (56.2%) against Kranz (9384 votes / 43.8%). The turnout was 41.6% (52011 eligible voters, 21,647 voters, 21,406 valid votes).

District administrators

Altenburger Land

In the easternmost district of Thuringia, the Altenburger Land district , the incumbent incumbent, Sieghardt Rydzewski, got 43.8% of the vote in the first ballot, while his challenger Michaele Sojka also reached the second ballot with 30.3%. There were four applicants in total. Sojka won the runoff election with 14,040 votes (50.2%) against Rydzewski (13,935 votes / 49.8%). The turnout was 34.2% (83,676 eligible voters, 28,619 voters, 27,975 valid votes).

Eichsfeld

There were only two applicants in the Eichsfeld district . In the traditional CDU stronghold, the incumbent CDU District Administrator Werner Henning was able to prevail with 70.3% of the vote against the candidate of the SPD and the Greens, Ronny Fritzlar (29.3%).

Gotha

The incumbent district administrator of the district of Gotha , Konrad Gießmann (CDU), won in the first ballot with a clear absolute majority of 63.6% against three other applicants.

Greiz

In the district of Greiz , incumbent Martina Schweinsburg (CDU) was able to prevail in the first ballot with an absolute majority of 60.4% of the votes against four other candidates.

Hildburghausen

In the Hildburghausen district , District Administrator Thomas Michael Müller was re-elected in the first ballot with a clear absolute majority of 64.7% of the votes. A total of four candidates stood for election.

Ilm district

In the Ilm district , the incumbent District Administrator Benno Kaufhold (CDU) with 39.7% and challenger Petra Enders (left) with 38.0% made it into the runoff election. A total of four candidates applied for the district office. In the runoff election, Enders prevailed with 23,287 votes (57.8%) against Kaufhold (17,034 votes / 42.2%). The turnout was 43.2% (94,064 eligible voters, 40,657 voters, 40,321 valid votes).

Kyffhäuserkreis

Incumbent Peter Hengstermann (CDU) entered the runoff election with 44.2% of the votes against Antje Hochwind (SPD), who came to 23.1%. In the runoff election, Hochwind prevailed with 11414 votes (52.7%) against Hengstermann (10264 votes / 47.3%). The turnout was 32.0% (68,738 eligible voters, 21,989 voters, 21,678 valid votes).

Nordhausen

In the Nordhausen district , the previous district administrator Joachim Claus had not run for office anymore. Out of five applicants in the first ballot, Egon Primas (CDU) made it into the runoff election with 35.2% and Birgit Keller (left) with 30.9%. In the runoff election, Keller prevailed with 14,866 votes (55.5%) against Primas (11,939 votes / 44.5%). The turnout was 36.9% (74,627 eligible voters, 27560 voters, 26,805 valid votes).

Saale-Holzland district

District Administrator Andreas Heller (CDU) was re-elected against three other applicants in the first ballot; he received 56.3% of the vote.

Saale-Orla district

The district election in the Saale-Orla district took place on January 15 and 29, 2012. Out of five candidates in the first ballot, incumbent Frank Roßner (SPD) with 35.5% and Thomas Fügmann (CDU) with 30.6% of the votes in the runoff election. There the challenger Fügmann was able to prevail with 52.7% of the votes against Roßner, who received 47.3%.

Saalfeld-Rudolstadt

District Administrator Marion Philipp (SPD) was defeated in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district with 41.0% of the votes to her only challenger, the non-party Hartmut Holzhey , who received 59.0%.

Schmalkalden-Meiningen

In the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen , the previous district administrator Ralf Luther (CDU) was no longer running. Three candidates applied for successor; Peter Heimrich (SPD; 43.7%) and Michael Heym (CDU; 40.8%) entered the runoff election. In the runoff election Heimrich prevailed with 30,132 votes (60.0%) against Heym (20 094 votes / 40.0%). The turnout was 46.0% (110,259 eligible voters, 50,729 voters, 50,226 valid votes).

Sömmerda

In the Sömmerda district , Harald Henning (CDU) entered the runoff election with 43.8% and Udo Hoffmann (Free Voters) with 23.9% of the votes. Four candidates had applied for the successor to the no longer candidate CDU district administrator Rüdiger Dohndorf . In the runoff election, Henning prevailed with 10,956 votes (65.3%) against Hoffmann (5812 votes / 34.7%). The turnout was 28.0% (61,167 eligible voters, 17,103 voters, 16,768 valid votes).

Sonneberg

In the smallest district of Thuringia, the incumbent District Administrator Christine Zitzmann (CDU) succeeded in re-election with 69.8% of the vote against her only challenger Uwe Schlammer (Die Linke), who received 30.2%.

Unstrut-Hainich district

In the Unstrut-Hainich district, SPD District Administrator Harald Zanker just managed to win re-election in the first ballot with 51.0% of the vote. There were four candidates in total.

Wartburg district

District Administrator Reinhard Krebs (CDU) was re-elected in the Wartburg district against three challengers in the first ballot. He received 56.4% of the vote.

Weimar Country

In the district of Weimarer Land , the incumbent Hans-Helmut Münchberg achieved an absolute majority of 77.8% of the votes in the first ballot and thus the highest result of all Thuringian district administrators and mayors. Münchberg was supported by both the CDU and the SPD. There were two opposing candidates.
