Political development

His commitment during the GDR period was primarily aimed at church youth work. On October 1, 1989, he co-founded the Democratic Awakening (DA) in Berlin and its spokesman in Jena. He left this party in March 1990 as a consequence of the result of the Volkskammer election and the merger of the DA, DSU and CDU . Until March 1990, Schröter was responsible at the “round table” in Jena for questions about renewal in the health system.

In October 1990 Schröter joined the SDP , later the SPD. From 1990 to 1994 he was a member of the Jena City Council and deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. From 1998 to 2004 he was chairman of the Jena SPD. From 2004 to 2018 he was a member of the state executive committee of the SPD Thuringia . In May 2000 he was defeated by the incumbent Peter Röhlinger in the runoff elections for mayor with 47.2%. From September 2000 to June 2006 he was the department head for social affairs and culture in the city of Jena. In 2001 he founded the Jena Cultural Foundation, which he is chairman to this day.

Schröter was elected Lord Mayor of Jena with 54.4% in a runoff election on May 21, 2006. The re-election took place in the runoff election on May 6, 2012 with 72.9%. In the local elections in 2018 on April 15 and 29, 2018, he was defeated in the second ballot by Thomas Nitzsche (FDP).

From 2010 to 2018 Albrecht Schröter was a member of the Presidium of the German Association of Cities . There he was particularly committed to supporting the Middle East peace process through closer cooperation between German, Israeli and Palestinian municipalities.

Schröter is committed against right-wing extremism . In 2009 he launched the initiative “Municipalities against Right-Wing Extremism”, which established a network of central German municipalities in the fight against neo-Nazis and aims to provide mutual support for cities during Nazi rallies.

Religious activities

Schröter is a committed Protestant Christian who is strongly committed to ecumenism. He received his doctorate in 1996 with the doctoral thesis The Catholic-Apostolic Congregations in Germany and the "Fall Geyer" and thus provided the first scientific account of the European history of the Catholic-Apostolic Congregations and the emergence of the New Apostolic Church . To this day, this work is considered a standard work and provides many previously unknown documents and research results as an important source of information. In 2001 the book Pictures for the History of the Catholic Apostolic Congregations was published, a bilingual illustrated book with previously unpublished images. He also wrote articles in the lexicon of new religious groups, scenes and world views , Jews in Jena and in Helmut Obst's What is Church? The self-understanding of apostolic churches and communities as the Church of Jesus Christ .

In addition to his elaborations on the history of the apostolic religious communities, he regularly gives specialist lectures on the topic and has been actively campaigning for the reconciliation of the New Apostolic Church and the Apostolic Community for several years.
