Harald Zanker (* 1964 in Mühlhausen / Thuringia ) is a German politician ( SPD ). He has been the district administrator of the Unstrut-Hainich district since 1994 .

Life

Zanker grew up as the son of a miner and a worker and was raised Roman Catholic. He completed his training as an electronics technician and became a member of the SED at the age of 18 . In the local elections in the GDR in 1989 he was elected mayor of Kaisershagen near Mühlhausen. After the political change , Zanker, who has since left the SED, was confirmed in office in the local elections in 1990 . In 1992 he joined the SPD. Since the election in 1994, in which he replaced the incumbent at the time helpful Reinhold (CDU), he has been the district administrator of the Unstrut-Hainich district . At that time, at the age of 30, he was the youngest district administrator in Germany and the only SPD district administrator in Thuringia.

In the local elections in 2000, 2006, 2012 and 2018 , Zanker was re-elected as district administrator. On July 15, 2013, the Weimar Administrative Court declared Zanker's third re-election in 2012 to be invalid because it saw the election campaign support by local mayors as a violation of the electoral law. The Weimar Higher Administrative Court overturned this judgment in November 2014.

On August 17, 2017, Zanker was proposed by the SPD state chairman Andreas Bausewein for the newly created post of State Secretary for the Thuringia regional reform in 2018 and 2019 . However, four days later he resigned from the post.

Since April 2013 Zanker has been married to elementary school teacher Claudia Zanker, who has been the district chairman of the SPD in the Unstrut-Hainich district since 2016.
