politics

Jendricke joined the SPD in 1993. A year later he became the youngest member of the Nordhausen city council and in 1999 became chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. In the same year he was elected to the district council. From 2001 to 2005 he was first alderman of the Nordhausen district.

On December 1, 2004, Jendricke was elected by the city council to the office of the first full-time alderman (first mayor) of the city of Nordhausen. On February 7, 2011, the city council elected Jendricke again as mayor of Nordhausen with 19 out of 37 votes; 17 members abstained.

In the runoff election in May 2012 for the office of Lord Mayor of Nordhausen, he was defeated by Klaus Zeh ( CDU ) with 48.9 percent.

Matthias Jendricke was investigated from March 22, 2013 on suspicion of rape and sexual abuse of people who were unable to resist; the rape allegation was dropped in the course of the proceedings. He remained on leave until the investigation was closed on September 26, 2013. After that he was responsible for the public order office (including housing benefit office), the professional fire brigade and the building regulations office. Jendricke initiated a number of regulatory complaints against Klaus Zeh, all of which, however, were rejected by the municipal inspectorate.

In the nomination for the district council election, he prevailed against the acting provisional district administrator Jutta Krauth. For the election on April 26, 2015, Jendricke achieved 34.0 percent. He won the runoff election against Stefan Nüßle (CDU) on May 10, 2015 with 64.7 percent (12,495 votes) and a turnout of 27.7 percent. On May 18, 2015, he officially took up the position of District Administrator and was sworn in on June 30.

On March 17, 2016, Jendricke was elected chairman of the SPD local association in Nordhausen.

In April 2016, the local and parliamentary group leaders of the CDU, Die Linke and FDP criticized Matthias Jendricke sharply in a joint press release. The statements made by Jendricke in an interview are "unworthy" for a district administrator. His personally motivated attacks are dishonest and willfully conjure up a disagreement between the city and the district.
