André Knapp (born August 30, 1973 in Schmalkalden ) is a German local politician ( CDU ) and has been Lord Mayor of Suhl since July 2018 .

Life

Growing up in Suhl, Knapp began training as a banker in 1990. After working for six months at Sparkassen in Denmark , he worked for Rhön-Rennsteig-Sparkasse . From 2004 to 2007 he completed a distance learning course in finance at the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe University for a Bachelor of Science degree. From 2005 he headed the real estate department of the Sparkasse.

Political career

Knapp joined the CDU in 2009 and was initially active as a knowledgeable citizen in the finance, procurement and auditing committee. In 2010 he became an assessor in the CDU district executive board, and in 2012 he became deputy chairman, which he remained until 2015. In the 2014 local elections , he was elected to the city council, where he was chairman of the CDU / FDP parliamentary group .

In 2018, supported by the FDP, he ran as a CDU candidate for the mayoral election. After lying behind the non-party incumbent Jens Triebel in the first ballot , he was elected in the runoff election with 52.4% of the vote. He took office on July 1, 2018.

In the course of the Thuringian regional reform, Knapp proposed to merge Suhl with the neighboring district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen in order to improve Suhl's economic situation.
