Julian Vonarb (born February 7, 1972 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a non-party German local politician and has been Lord Mayor of Gera since 2018 .

Life

Vonarb's father Alfred Vonarb was mayor of Breisach for years . Vonarb passed his Abitur at the Franco-German High School in Freiburg in 1991 and completed an apprenticeship as a banker at the Sparkasse Freiburg-Nördlicher Breisgau from 1991 to 1993 . After completing his military service with the crisis reaction forces of the Franco-German Brigade , he studied business administration at the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management from 1996 to 2000 with a degree in business administration. He then became a manager at Commerzbank and worked in its Gera branch until 2016. In 2016 he set up his own business consultancy. He also held teaching positions at the Glauchau University of Cooperative Education , the Bautzen University of Cooperative Education , the SRH University of Applied Sciences for Health Gera and the Saxon Administration and Business Academy in Dresden .

In December 2017 Vonarb announced his candidacy for the office of Mayor of Gera in the 2018 local elections . Member of the CDU since 2015 , he resigned from the party before he ran because it supported the incumbent Viola Hahn . According to Vonarb, 80% of his election campaign was financed from his own resources. He cited economic and tourism promotion as well as the establishment of a technical university in Gera as central election concerns . In the first ballot on April 15, 2018, he received the most votes with 23.9% and - while incumbent Hahn was voted out - against Dieter Laudenbach ( AfD ) in the second ballot. There he was elected Lord Mayor on April 29, 2018 with 69.8% of the vote. Vonarb officially took office on July 1, 2018.

Vonarb is married with four biological children and a stepson. He lived with his family in the neighboring Bad Köstritz for a long time , but moved to Gera in the run-up to the 2018 election.
