Constantin Sorger

Christian Friedrich Constantin Sorger (born July 15, 1829 in Weißbach , Thuringia, † February 22, 1877 in Gera ) was a German lawyer and municipal civil servant. From 1873 he was Lord Mayor of Gera.

Career

Sorger began to study law at the University of Jena . In 1849 he became active in the Corps Thuringia Jena . When he was inactive, he moved to the Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen . After completing his studies, he became an accessist at the Volksberg justice office in 1851 and at the Oberweißbach justice office in 1852 . In 1854 he passed the second state examination at the Eisenach appellate court and became an assessor at the Rudolstadt district court . On August 1, 1854, he was admitted to the bar in Leutenberg , where he also became mayor.

Since November 30, 1860, he was a member of the Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt state parliament for the Volksberg constituency . From 1866 to 1869 he represented the constituency of Rudolstadt-Stadt in the state parliament. On February 7, 1867, he was elected President of the State Parliament with 8 to 3 votes. On September 25, 1869, he was re-elected President of the State Parliament with 14 of 15 votes.

In 1866 he resigned the mayor's office in Leutenberg and moved to Rudolstadt, where he initially worked as a lawyer. After the resignation of Lord Mayor Wilhelm Weber in November 1872, he was elected Lord Mayor of Gera and took office on March 14, 1873.

Sacher's tenure began in the early days of the German Empire and was characterized by the rapid industrialization of Gera and the surrounding areas. In 1875 the city of Gera had over 20,000 inhabitants. Essentially, Sorger continued the measures started by his predecessor Weber in the city administration.

In June 1874 one of the first German auxiliary schools for the “weakly qualified” was founded in Gera .

In 1875 Gera received a railway connection in the direction of Greiz and Plauen with the opening of the Elstertalbahn and in 1876 also a connection in a westerly direction with the opening of the Weimar-Geraer Bahn (Holzlandbahn). In February 1876, the Ferberturm built above the city was handed over to the city of Gera.

From October 19, 1874 until his death he was also a member of the 10th constituency (Wurzbach and the surrounding area) in the Reuss younger line of the Landtag .

Constantin Sorger died in February 1877 and is the only Lord Mayor in the history of Gera to have died in office. Robert Fischer was elected as his successor in April 1877 .
