The Ferberturm is a 21 meter high observation tower on the Ronneburger Höhe in Gera .

history

The Ferberturm was built in 1874/75 by the Gera merchant and mineralogist Dr. Moritz Rudolf Ferber on the Ronneburger Höhe, the highest point in Geras, 300 meters above sea level and 124 meters above the city. With the tower, an outbuilding in the form of a ruin was built, which served as a castellan's apartment. Blocks from Leumnitz Zechstein were used as building material . The construction costs amounted to 15,800 gold marks . The tower was transferred to the city of Gera on February 5, 1876 and was later used as a weather station.

The first castellan of the Ferberturm was Gottlieb Krieg, known for his rudeness. He was a well-known Geraer original and was colloquially called Kriegs Gottlieb by the citizens .

In 1946/47 the ruins were expanded to make space for dining facilities, and the dilapidated tower was renovated in 1989.

The observation tower and the restaurant of the same name are still popular excursion destinations today.
