Community structure

history

Selmanroth was first mentioned in 1055 in a deed of donation from the Archbishop of Mainz. Streitholz appears in a document from 1286 as Strietholz . Mengelrode is also mentioned in 1310 and Bischhagen in 1445.

Siemerode, Mengelrode, Bischhagen and Streitholz were part of Kurmainz until secularization . From 1802 to 1945 the places were then part of the Prussian province of Saxony .

From 1945 the places were part of the Soviet occupation zone and from 1949 part of the GDR . From 1961 until the fall of the Wall and reunification in 1989/1990, the places were close to the inner-German border.

In July 1986 the municipality of Siemerode celebrated the 750th anniversary with a week of festivities. Since 1990 they have been part of the newly founded state of Thuringia. On January 1, 1991, Siemerode, Mengelrode, Bischhagen and Streitholz merged to form a unified community based in Siemerode. The community was named after the 371 m high hill of the same name between the towns of Streitholz and Bischhagen.
