history

The originally medieval fortified church of the place was demolished after damage in the Thirty Years War and several repairs in 1732 and 1733 except for the church tower . A new nave in the Baroque style was built in its place . Auxiliary Bishop Christow Ignatius von Gudenus from Erfurt inaugurated this new village church in 1737. Until 1945 the surrounding cemetery , the church .

During an attack by fighter bombers on April 7, 1945, a bomb fell directly in front of the tower portal. The shock wave lifted the tower and it collapsed. The nave was slightly damaged.

Both the nave and the remains of the tower were torn down immediately and reconstruction began that same year. On November 12, 1950, Bishop Johannes Dietz consecrated the church. The double tower façade, which characterizes the village and is made of ashlar masonry made of unplastered red sandstone, was added between 1955 and 1958. The baroque portal attached to the church in 1950 was previously on a sheepfold in the former Teistungenburg monastery . The new organ was installed by the Schönfeld company from Stadtilm .

Building description

Interior view of the Church of St. Nikolaus in Siemerode

The most striking feature of the east-facing St. Nicholas Church is its west building with the double tower facade made of red sandstone. The cuboids used have a smaller format in the lower part than in the upper part. The towers end with copper-covered pointed helmets. In the middle of the western front is the portal made of light natural stone. In addition to the portal, the tower substructure has only narrow window slots up to the height of the nave roof, and arched windows were only installed in the upper floor connecting the tower and the two tower floors above. In the tower connection basement windows are coupled executed construction as double and triple windows, underlining the appeal of neo-Romanesque designs. The nave has three aisles with low side aisles and a higher central nave, it is lightly plastered and covered with a red tile roof. In the side aisles and in the upper aisle, simple arched windows ensure that the interior is illuminated. The choir in the width of the central nave closes off polygonally to the east. Inside, the aisles are separated from the central nave by rectangular pillars with segmented arches. A painted, flat wooden barrel with the Coronation of Mary as the central motif forms the upper end of the central nave .
