Gudenus (formerly also knights , barons , imperial barons , counts of Gudenus ) is the name of a family originating in Spangenberg ( Hesse ), which belongs to the former Austrian nobility and which still flourishes in the male line .

history

The family originally came from Spangenberg in Hesse and first appeared in a document in 1594 with Christoffel Gude (nus) , later the Landgrave of Hesse, mayor of Sontra .

Moritz Gudenus (1596–1680) was a Reformed preacher in Abterode in 1626 after he had to leave Marburg in 1625 because of his confession. He became a Catholic in 1630 , entered Kurmainzer services and died as a bailiff in Treffurt . Of his five sons, the eldest was Johann Daniel (1624–1694), doctor of theology , titular bishop of Utica and Mainz auxiliary bishop for Hesse, Thuringia and the Eichsfeld in Erfurt . The second, the doctorate in law Johann Christoph Freiherr von Gudenus (1632-1705), was Reichshofkanzleitaxator, Kurmainzer Privy Council and Minister Resident in Vienna as well as Count Palatinate . Ranks

The knightly imperial nobility was awarded on March 5, 1668 to the brothers Christoph, Johann Daniel, Urban Ferdinand and Johann Moritz Gudenus. The Imperial Knighthood with the salutation "Noble Lord" took place on May 7, 1696 and the Imperial Baron with the salutation "Well-born" on September 20, 1696.

The Hungarian indigenous class was awarded on December 5, 1703. The dignity of the old Lower Austrian knighthood took place on February 10, 1714. The Bohemian incolat in the gentry was awarded on April 15, 1756 for Franz de Paula Freiherrn von Gudenus.

The descent of Baron Gabriel von Gudenus, who died in 1874, was raised to the status of Austrian count by Emperor Franz Joseph on August 16, 1907 in Ischl . The diploma was issued in Vienna on October 22, 1907. As one of 64 counts, the family received a hereditary seat in the manor house on June 14, 1907 , the upper house of the Austrian Imperial Council .

Thannhausen Castle (Styria) has been owned by the family since 1806 . The associated Neuhaus Castle was sold in 1982. In 1823 Ferdinand Freiherr von Gudenus acquired the Frondsberg rule; Frondsberg Castle in Rabendorf ( Birkfeld municipality , Styria) is also still inhabited by the family to this day. Külml Castle in Feistritz near Anger was owned by the family from 1811 to 1954.
